    Solaris?

I downloaded Solaris for x86 from the sun website a little while ago, but I have no idea how to install it, there's no install instructions anywhere on the site and there doesn't appear to be any information on the iso images, and the discs don't autoboot..

Has anyone got any experience installing solaris on x86?
    How do you do it?
    Have you got any tips?

    Ta

Heh last time i used solaris it blew windows out the park, but then i'm talking solaris in about 1998 on some rather nice moduled based Sun sparc stations.

If you've got no answers tomorrow stoo i'll try and refresh my memory and download it and see what i can do with it...

The original is excellent, the George Clooney remake is not as good, but still a very nicely shot film. Oh. Ignore me. ops:

    okey dokey here we go.

Fisrt the solaris on X86 install routine is VERY different from the sparc version, please don't try to follow the Sparc instructions.

Now despite what Sun say Solaris is a fussy bugger on X86 so before you begin go to sun and check the HCL vor the version of solaris against your machine. If you have any none supported kit I'd seriously think about chaning it or not doing the install as for someone without expereince it can be real pain.

Older versions of Solaris X86 can boot from the cd and then they like you to make a boot disk (you don't have to) makig the boot disk is all on screen prompts. Later versions of x86 install straight from the CD, and its as simple as windows you follow the prompts and do what it tells you.

My top tip is the solaris x86 disk layout tries to imitate the solaris sparc methods of using a disk when you are asked about the disk layout I suggest for your fist go you a suggested layout, and pay CLOSE attention when it tells you about what is doing with the disk (the boot loader is crap)

If this is your first attempt at unix system, I strongly suggest trying a more "friendly" linux distro such as Suse / Mandrake / Slackware to a.) familerise your self with how the basic unix systems work there is a lot more help out there for linux, and the install routine is much easier, then when you get the colder solaris install you'll understand a little more whats going on. Plus a lot more hardware is supported. Once your a bit more on your feet have a go at solaris.

If you want to have a go at it and get stuck, I'll be happy to help.

That's okay, I'm already a veteran with monkeying about with various distros, I think I've installed virtually all the major linux distributions at one time or another - Slackware, Red Hat, Suse, Mandrake, etc etc, and several of them in the days before the nice friendly install menus

I think there must be a problem with my solaris images then because they certainly don't auto run, or give me any option of making boot disks..

would you like me to make a boot image floppy for you - you can then download it and save it to a disk to test your images ?
