Windows 7 - display internet speed.
I've just upgraded to windows 7 and I despise the system tray network icon - it tells you nothing. In XP there used to be the option to display network and internet connection icons in the system tray. When you hovered the mouse over these icons they would display your network speed and your internet downstream speed. This seems to have been removed from Win 7 due to resources, which is ludicrous. I can't find my internet connection speed unless I go into the router software.
Does anyone know how to display my internet connection speed in Windows 7? Just the internet speed not activity etc.
I've tried Network Activity Indicator but this doesn't seem to do it. Is there a simple program that will do this?
I really hate microsoft when the remove these features altogether rather than turn them off by default and then allow you to search for 30 mins on the internet to find how to the feature on - like quick launch.
Thanks
Re: Windows 7 - display internet speed.
I use a gadget called Network Meter. It supports wireless and cable. Has always done the job for me.

Youll probably find its the result of user surveys, surveys conducted on the clueless masses.
These results are looked at, and someone eventually realises that those that know what the numbers mean, and if they are important, will have some other way of finding them out, but to the vast majority of users they mean nothing and just make them complain something is too slow.

Control panel > network and internet > network sharing center > network adapter > local area conenction !

Same for me :)
Re: Windows 7 - display internet speed.
There is also a program called NetMeter that is now free and opensource. I've been using it for years on WinXP and Win7 machines and it's one of the standard programs I put onto machines I build for other people.

Many reasons.
Network meter is really good, but it does have one major bug and that it won't remember the network interface for speed. I always have to select it myself.

That's odd, never had that issue personally, even when updating gadget versions. Have you fired of a bug report? They were pretty quick at rectifying an issue I had with their CPU Meter's memory display.
