    Windows 7 boot-up problem

I just used a Windows 7 'upgrade' version to install windows 7.

    I previously had Windows Vista.

Unless I have the windows installation disk in, it tries to boot-up the Windows Vista installation, which is in a different place and I get a black and white screen informing me that my 'boot file is corrupted' and asking me to run the repair utility on the Windows Vista disk.

As I don't want Windows Vista, I don't follow this advice, and Windows 7 repair utility tells me that the boot-up files are fine.

Obviously, I missed out some vital step in 'upgrading' to Windows 7.

The installation works perfectly if I boot off of the CD.

How can I get windows to work properly?

So you upgraded, but did a clean install? You should be able to fix it easily enough using EasyBCD should be able to sort it for you.

The upgrade editions will only upgrade an existing install of Windows XP or Vista. There is no way to do a true clean install, although I have seen guides (Vista-specific) that can help to workaround this. Unfortunately, the process is much more stringent for Boot Camp installs and will likely introduce a few hurdles to doing this kind of an end-run.

My advice? Pick up a $99 OEM version of 7 from NewEgg.com , and you'll be good to go.......!

try repairing the boot file using vista and go back into the main os and try again. I believe that the upgrade disks are basically the same as full disks but that is what i heard.

Do a clean install with the upgrade disk then activate it this way:

    In Regedit go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/"
Then change MediaBootInstall from "1" to "0"

You will then need to run CMD as Administrator and type "slmgr /rearm"

Reboot and activate as usual, from what I've read this is legal as long as you do own a previous version of Windows.
