Dreamweaver is just a WYSIWYG editor, while Joomla is a CMS. They are really two different things.

If you want to build websites and make cash from it, the 'common' list of areas that are required are: HTML, PHP / ASP, MySQL / whatever database, CSS, AJAX and other things like webserver and database administration.

Sure, you could knock up some small basic things in Dreamweaver, but the competition out there is huge. To make some decent money from it you're looking at reading up on a lot of things and practising for a while. It's not a process that happens overnight.

Tools like dreamweaver can help to speed up development, but if you want to have a career building websites then you need to understand HTML and CSS (hand coding) as Dreamweaver will help so far, but you need to understand what is going on underneath.

If you do decide to go the cms route then remember to make sure its one with decent security and plenty of updates. Keep regular backups of the database and site files and remember to keep on top of security updates.

    thanks for the fast replies.
Time wise i have no restraints and would prefer to take my time to learn than rush out and do something on a whim hence the trying to get all the info i can.
would it be a good idea to start using and practising with dreamweaver whilst learning html and css so that i could understand the coding being used? maybe start with reading HTML, XHTML & CSS for Dummies to get to grip with the basics first then moving up to better/advanced things

That is actually the way i started out years ago - I would create things in Dreamweaver and then examined the code it produced.

Re: web site building - best way to do it

The best way to buld a site depends, in my view, on exactly what kind of site it is.

If doing it commercially, as it seems you're considering, then agent is right, though I'd add that it varies from site to site. A simple site with a few pages is one thing, but a dynamic site that's database-driven, or something visually flashy (excuse pun) is very different.

Whatever you do needs to be affordable for the client and cost-effective in terms of time for you. Sometimes that means picking, and paying for, a commercial package, like a CMS, because it's far easier and cheaper to buy and customise than it is to build from the ground up. If someone wanted you to build a Ferrari, you wouldn't start out by inventing a wheel.

So you need a solid grounding in basic technologies, and a knowledge of the tools out there, and preferably, how to use them.

Too add to this. There seem to be a lot of people that call themselves web developers who simply get word press templates, edit them and spam them out, with them looking rather poor but being quickly produced.

It say not falling into this trap would be a good place to start.

I agree with that, but it also depends on customer expectations. Sometimes, that's enough, especially for a customer that wants a website yesterday, and wants it on a budget of 38p.

As above, but to add to that, there's two areas in building websites IMO, web design and web development. What you would need to learn depends on what you want to do. But the minimum you'll need to learn either way is HTML/CSS/Javascript, and for web development on a larger scale you'd be looking at PHP/Java/.NET (although, personally I hate PHP).
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

Learn to handcode XHTML and CSS. Also add in a little PHP once you are confident with them. Javascript is handy too, but not vital. That way you can work with Wordpress, Joomla, Magento etc (The most important ones) aswell as make small (X)HTML sites from scratch.

I wish I learnt to handcode alot earlier, but I took the photoshop, and slice into dreameaver route. Which always looked good, but didn't really allow me to understand much of what I was doing!

If you are looking forward to get a website of yours, then it is important that you have sound knowledge of CSS, HTML, PHP etc.
