    Forefront Endpoint Protection

Does anyone have any experience with this software and what are your thoughts on it?

I have been asked to look into this as a possibility for putting it onto servers we host as we are a SPLA partner, however after several phone calls to Microsoft I am none the wiser how to license it.

Since these are individual servers we need an AV that can run without being managed and FEP appears to only run through SCCM, yet I have seen it mentioned that it can run stand alone. I tried and installed the client on a server but by doing so it only appears to be an evaluation copy and I have been through all the options and cannot find out how to license it.

Is the standalone product free like MSE? Does it run OK as an AV like this? Will the evaluation come to an end? Will the definitions be updated etc?

    Re: Forefront Endpoint Protection

Surely you want any AV solution in a corporate network to be managed? You want to know where your infections are, what they are and where they came from, right?

From the licensing and pricing guide...

    Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010
Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 is available as a per-user or per-device subscription through Microsoft Volume Licensing. The subscription includes all antimalware updates and product upgrades during the license period.  Client operating systems can be licensed with a User Subscription License (USL) or Device Subscription License (DSL).  Server operating systems must be licensed with a Device Subscription License (DSL). Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2 or R3 serves as the management infrastructure for Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010. For customers who want to centrally manage Forefront Endpoint Protection, valid System Center Configuration Manager 2007 licenses are required
    Purchasing Options
Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 can be purchased as a stand-alone product or as part of the Core CAL Suite or Forefront Protection Suite.

In terms of running it standalone I seem to recall installing it on one of my home lab boxes from Technet. I'll fire them up and see if it's expired (though that will have been a Technet license, not sure how that would differ from a retail license for standalone use.)

    Re: Forefront Endpoint Protection

I do not want to use it on an corporate network, although we may look at deploying it on our internal network at a later date (we currently have a license for another AV software that still has a year left).

I perhaps should have explained better. I work for a hosting company, each server we supply is segregated on it's own network and not managed by us (normally). We just want a standalone client that is good and since we are a SPLA partner we can get MS licenses pretty cheap, we thought it might be a good idea.

    Re: Forefront Endpoint Protection

Well after firing up my test fileserver the standalone install of FEP still looks to work fine, though as I said it was installed under a Technet license, so you'd need to speak to whoever your licensing partners are to confirm that.

    Re: Forefront Endpoint Protection

Interesting, do you know how long roughly it has been installed for? Most of the evaluation licenses for MS is 120 days, would be interesting to know if it's gone past that.

I am waiting to hear back from our licensing partner, but just thought someone on here may know. Thanks for you help so far.

I'd imagine around 6 months or so, but it's not powered on all the time (as I said, home lab)
