Re: What is the best security suite at the moment?

    I use:

    MSE
    NoScript
Ghostery (stops those nasty tracking cookies)
Various other privacy extensions (betterprivacy, httpseverywhere, etc)

I actually didn't have a problem with Norton. On the one hand it was bloated, but on the other it was absolutely amazing at getting rid of ads in every application imaginable - way before ABP became popular. It even stripped them from MSN somehow. People say that the more recent editions are actually good, but I just don't see the need to pay any more. If it was a mission critical computer, maybe, but it's not.

That's good to know, albeit Windows Firewall seems to do a good enough job. I think Comodo was either unavailable at the time I switched or I was having issues with its first Windows 7 compatible release. This was in the latter part of the Windows 7 beta phase and I've never really looked into it again.

That could be it, then. I waited for W7 to ship .... then waited a few months more before diving in.

At least if a free product doesn't work, it has only cost you time and effort to find out.

Edit - checked, and it was v6.
I had problems when I installed Kaspersky 2011 some time ago, A quick google revealed it was a known problem with the 2011 version so I reverted back to the 2010 version. I couldn't moan too much as I was given the Licence for free.

I used to pay for NOD32 until I was offered a free Kaspersky licence but, It annoyed me that Kaspersky slowed down the launch of programs and even when I changed the settings it ignored the settings and continued to scan apps. before they were launched.

I think the worst I used was Panda when it decided half way during uninstalling to stop and I could neither install it or uninstall it.

Microsoft Security Essentials is free and does not seem to slow down the computers I have installed it on.

Re: What is the best security suite at the moment?

I often wondered if NOD32 is too light weight for its own good, as I got infected when trying a 30 day trial of the antivirus package on a clean install of Windows Vista fully patched up.

I had the same happen to me after being a year with Kaspersky hence the change. I never realised until I changed just what a resource hog Kaspersky was. I have tried all the top ones and it is a case of mixing fortress like clampdown with grinding your machine to a hault. I guess it also depends on what type of browsing you do

The thing that irritated me the most about Kaspersky was it scanned all programs when you tried to launch them, Which negated the point of having an SSD. Even adjusting its settings to stop it didn't work as it still scanned them regardless of what the setting were set to.

I used to use NOD32 before Kaspersky and the only reason I changed was because I was given Kaspersky for free. Now I can't justify spending much on AV if I can use a good free product.

I haven't seen much mention of AVG Free. I've ended back there after a round of the usual free suspects. Still using Zonealarm free as a firewall, with AdAware as a sweep for malware.

Hadn't had any issues so far on Win 7. [ Crossed everything and wonders why I tempt fate like this....]

MS security essentials. Free uninvasive and utterly non-Microsoftish. Not a 'suite' though - i.e. it won't annoy the crap out of you but on the flipside assumes you're not a complete idiot.

Re: What is the best security suite at the moment?

Not tried MSE yet, though very interested in the positive comments in this thread. I dismissed all MS 'security' software as not up to the job years ago, clearly time for a rethink on my part. On the freebie front, there seem to be a fair few six month giveaway licences for some of the large suites on many pc mag cover discs these days. I remember seeing Panda, Kaspersky and Bulldog amongst others over the past year or so.

In my opinion, Microsoft security essentials. Though I used ESET for a while and I can't fault it, just when he time came to renew, I didn't want to pay! I haven't had any problems since I switched.

Re: What is the best security suite at the moment?

I have swapped all the computers in my family to MSE. Saving my nan (who is rather computer ignorant - everyone uses Norton, so it must be good) £120 a year, and it's a damn good piece of software

I've been using MSE since I started this thread and it seems to work well and is not restricting the PC in anyway like Kaspersky was.

    Very pleased so far.
