Shame to see the teams numbers continuing to dwindle, but with the school hols, and hot weather no-one can really blame you! Team hexus rolls on none-the-less... With me at the top! Yay! Hoorah! I'd like to thank.... Wait a sec... where's everyone going.... Oh well. I gues it's not ALL about me.

1stRaven is now using guerilla tactics on his work server, sneaking a week folding here and there. Hope you can keep something still going bud. The team wouldn't be where it is in the world rankings without your contributions! In fact we'd be closer to the 100m mark than the 150m that we're fast closing in on....

Well done to the perennial folders out there who keep putting their rigs through the torture that is f@h. Best use of PC kit when you're not using it INHO, even if it does start to control your life (and bills!)

Well done there to Buttonina and RedDragon - Fantastic contributions! Despite my last prediction, RedDragon didn;t quite get the most improved cumulative user, but did put in a strong performance to get second.
Amendment. These figures are the same as last month as I forgot to set the "this month" and "last month" flags in my spreadsheet. Sorry, but it's too much work to undo - these are correct. Last months numbers however are actually the figures for August. Sorry!

Now the final measure - measured vs your own rolling average. Only contributions are counted, so if you have been unable to fold for 4 out of the last 8 months, then I only measure against the months you have contributed (ie vs the 4 not all 8). Probably the harshest measure as this measures against your submitted folding capacity...

A fabulous showing from hexus-joshwa, ChrisMullard, stringent, and Scaryjim. Great to see some of the longer serving folders dominating the those who have contributed the most. Is everyone upgrading recently or something?? Whatever the reason, very well done to you all, but this months crown definitely goes to Joshwa - Well done mate!

Everyone with a score greater than 0, very well done - you're doing more than you have ever done before ON AVERAGE.

There's a long list of -100%'s in there, indicating no points returned in that period. Sorry to see you all go, but please come back soon. I'd normally try to add something prophetic extolling the virtues of folding, but I really have lost the will having done these figures twice this morning. So for those of you who could be bothered to read all the way through a useless fact:

"A chip of silicon a quarter-inch square has the capacity of the original 1949 ENIAC computer, which occupied a city block."

    Wonder if that could fold....?

    Foldon folks

Yes - but only the work servers, sadly 4 Hyperthreaded Intel cores @ 1.86GHz are apparently better than 4 AMD cores @ 2.5GHz... use a lot less electricity too, theoretically...

CAn you just clarify that for me Jim - 4 cores+ 4HT cores > 4 AMD or 4 cores (2 Normal+2HT) - I'm sure that you are referring to the former, but I want to be doubly sure....

I've read on other forums that Hyperthreading adds about 25% to the capacity of the machine which should put the machines on a par, but your stats would suggest there's a greater margin between them.

Yeah, the former - the new server is a 45W Quad core Xeon with hyperthreading, base frequency 1.86GHz, and I'm getting around 6kppd out of it running 8 threads. The old server is a quad core opteron at 2.5GHz, and I was getting around 4.5 - 5kppd out of it. I think there might have been some new projects which come back with slightly higher ppd since I switched, but that shouldn't be enough to account for a 20% jump in production, which is what I've seen. Very impressed with the Xeons tbh, wish I could afford one for myself

I must admit, they certainly seem to be the Dogs-Danglies - we use them at work too, but that's all kept very locked down and hidden away from us Apps guys - we just see the VM front ends. I mean, imagine if I could commandeer both our hosts, each with (from memory) 24 cores @ 2.93 Ghz and 256 GB ram. I think even that would make 1stRaven blush....

Doing that would definitely kill our MS Dynamics Nav installation though, hence I've never considered it...

Re: 2011 Folder of the Month (August)

I'm lucky - I'm no longer the only web developer, but I'm still the main hardware guy. The servers are essentially mine, bought to my specs, and I have full admin access to them. The only thing the uni does is plug in power and network cables, everything else is down to me.

I'm still debating whether or not I can risk folding on a live web server though - after all, the web serving load shouldn't be massive...
