Thumbs down ATI & Linux - the best HOWTO source

I'm trying, I really am trying, to use linux more on my main rig. I use it as my router - have done for months, but until I can get ATI's graphics drivers working it's just not going to happen.

I'm currently running Debian testing, which is a very nice distro, easy to work with and update. Still, no matter what steps I take, whenever I THINK I've got it working, fglrxinfo tells me that the mesa output is being used, not the ATI OpenGL, which is... annoying, to put it tamely.

    So, what do to?

    Suggestions?

    Cheers,
    Kez.

That's the one I've been trying to use, lol.

I think it's my motherboard chipset causing agpgart aggro. It's a KT400. The thing sucks so bad that kernel 2.6 crashes on boot and actually trips out the USB hubs on the board!

I think I've messed it up so much that I'm just going to format and try again... sigh.

All I did was literally strip everythin outta the kernal that's not needed, especially DRM. Everthing else was built into the kernel (I hate modules). Installed the latest ati drivers, changed to the ati opengl librarys and it worked. the other thing to check is the UseInternalAGP setting in xf86config, try setting it to the other vale, ie if its yes try no as well.

Well the only trouble is I'm never sure what to leave in and out of the kernel.

There any comprehensive lists of what's what? I'm using make menuconfig, but if there's a better way....

Heh, I missed your reply somehow. Kernel wise, you're obviously gonna need support for all your hardware. The only graphics related things in there that you need are AGPGART support for you mobo chipset. Also make sure that you do not have Direct Rendering Manager selected as it' been know o cause pronlems.

I dunno how debian apt-gets works but make sure you've got the latest version of the ati drivers, does it screen out potentially problematic files? I know gentoo does.

/var/log/messages should give you saome info about whats stopping the drivers form loading if they dont

You'll be pleased to know I've managed to get it sorted!

agpgart on a via chipset doesn't like AGP8x with kernel 2.4 (which is all I can run until I get 2.6 recompiled into a USB friendly state, lol.)

You have to get the red-hat ati package and use alien to convert it to a debian package.

Still, it all works now wooo!

Just out of interest what are the ATI drivers for gentoo like. The ones they saying you can emerge during the installation of gentoo?

The current 'safe' drivers in portage are out of date, so install the latest masked package instead. I'm using them myself and they seem to work just fine for me. UT2004 under linux rocks
