Not sure as it seems a bit more convoluted to get under the hood(or maybe its me being lazy??).

AFAIK,according to the official blurb Win8 has significant changes.

Otherwise I will do my best to avoid.
I heard Windows 7 runs away in fear when Win8(who wants those stupid "doz" its all about the tiles man) is in the same room. I was running Win8 in a VM so my Windows 7 installation felt much safer.

On a ever so slightly serious note, since I ran it in a VM I cannot make any direct comparisons to Windows 7 with regards to speed. It did install quickly though.

Its in a VM,but it is very quick. However, unless I compare a clean install of Windows 7 in a VM too I cannot say if it is quicker.

I am running it off a OCZ Vertex SSD.

    Re: Windows 8 Download

Its quite a bit different under the hood, one of the most impactful changes is the applications suspending rather than closing.

You can also disable metro completely, at the moment its a registry operation to do so. But one of the main things about this release is metro for getting the touch UI development kick started. But eitherway

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
set the key RPEnabled to 0

    Options options options

(Personally I can still see a use for metro on my desktop, in the morning have a quick look at emails, and check the result of my overnight (futures) trading before getting changed).

I'm assuming that the only Metro web browser would be IE 10?

It also seems you can get rid of Metro by renaming a file too:

I've got to say, looking at what CAT posted, it is just like looking at a larger version of a windows phone and that's not good!

Having to slide the date to enter a password? What the hell.

Supposedly its the future and us oldies will be left behind(a few chaps on one or two forums think that it seems). For a touchscreen, the UI looks fine but not so much for a desktop ATM.

Hopefully by the first release candidate ,Microsoft will actually improve the UI for those of us stuck in the olden days and want a better desktop.

Us oldies? I'm only 17, it doesn't appeal to me whatsoever.

Yeah, it looks fine for a tablet or touch screen device but having to drag things about with a mouse and navigate through big blocks with keys doesn't seem right.

Supposedly, all the applications will soon only run under the metro UI and if you don't use it you are screwed!! It is because Microsoft said so(not the screwed part) at their keynotes!! Bahhhhh!!

This operating system is going to fail on desktop computers, too much metro crap rammed down our faces. Will stick to Windows 7 till Windows 9 comes out. Also what is with the ribbon interface being integrated in to windows explorer? Eurghh

    LOL.

They didn't say that at all, the message, for us developer types, is Metro is for casual apps, basically its for the iPad types, those who think a power user is the kind of person who browses facebook and twitter simulataniously.

They are also suggesting those be in tablets, and touchscreen PCs.

As I've said, and this as as someone who has been using it, I can see the appeal of metro for that first thing in the morning use, the kind of thing splashtop was ment to be.

Edit: Forgot to say, don't do it via the rename way, its retardled and should fill your eventviewer with spurious crap. Turn its akin to turning off the engin by removing the gear box, sure you'll stop the engine driving.....

God damnit why do people like you never READ THE NOTES

this is a pre-release version for devs, we're not talking beta here its in no way feature complete the APIs aren't fixed..........

*goes off to the cave of people who bother to actually read the dev notes and use stuff rather than just posting like a muppet*

    Nice work dude
Now, time for me to install it as well. Remember kids, if you download Windows betas, you get FREE keys when it's out.

    Btw, CAT, empty your inbox.

    Re: Windows 8 Download

i didn't get big massive dates and times on my 64 bit install. i just made a new partition and installed as a dual boot. when i saw the blocks i wasn't sure where to start so clicked on the weather to set my area and it crashed and rebooted. tried again and it looked a bit funny and crashed. then i did some update thing and kept away from the weather and found the desktop that looked 90% the same as win7. then i booted back into win7 to preserve my sanity. i'll play about a bit more when bored. it installed firefox okay at least, found my network drives and stuff. i might stick it on and old pc as i seem to have a large collection of them, and i'll see if i can bootcamp it on my macbook. i usually spend more time setting up than using some of these early versions
