    Which Firefox version?

First, I admit, I'm being lazy and asking the group's opinion rather than working it out myself.

I use FF. Have for ages. I'm currently on v5.whatever and am getting nagged to go to v6. Normally, I've just upgraded almost without thinking, but I did not liker the changes in the move to v5. I just couldn't be bothered to faff about going back.

But, it's got me wondering whether to go to v6, or just put up with v5 .... which I've only just about got used to.

Or indeed, whether to switch to something else, like Opera. Not Chrome, though, for reasons I don't want to bother going into.

    So :-

    1) Stay with FF v5 .... and no doubt, compromise security
    2) Upgrade to v6 (6.0.2 IIRC)
    3) Move to something else.

    Thoughts? Recommendations? Reasons?

    Thanks in advance.

Opera is good although given that I've used Friefox for years, I don't feel as though I am quite at one with Opera so it puts me off.

If I recall, the changes in FF v6 that you will notice are less han minimal so it'll act pretty much as v5 does.

Always use Opera on my phone though.

    Re: Which Firefox version?

v6 is fine. when you install just change the options to add the menu back at the top and tabs the way you want (on top or below). i've also used v8 and v9 which were both pretty solid. only thing is some ad ons don't work with the alpha releases

i don't normally use anything else, once you get used to a browser and all the advanced bits you don't usually want to start again. i've played with others but never immediately liked them so didn't get to know them better

    Re: Which Firefox version?

FF5 has some security issues FF6 addresses. You may as well ignore Firefox version numbers as a measure of stability these days, they're bumping 'major' version numbers even for the most trivial fixes these days. It's just silly nonsense.

Gentoo stable is still on Firefox 3.6.20.

    Re: Which Firefox version?

6 was the start of a new numbering convention, so got a new version number iirc. The actual changes are barely noticeable.

    Re: Which Firefox version?

Indeed, the differences between FF5 and FF6 are few to non-existent.

As for Chrome, if you do fancy trying it but dislike the reporting of browsing stats and the likes, try SRWare Iron - it's Chrome with all the Google bits removed. All the addons (or certainly most) for Chrome still work.

    Re: Which Firefox version?

Opera and Chrome are way better. I ditched firefox long time ago, due to its memory intensive appetite and it doesn't load webpage any faster than opera and chrome.

Latest FF is fine. I think you just need to get used to the changes but you have option to keep to your settings anyways.

    Re: Which Firefox version?

I'm an IE (at work only), FF and Chrome user, and it seems clear now that Mozilla have woken up and smelt the coffee - the public like higher numbers, and so are chasing Chrome with a vengeance!
Seriously though, they seem to have dismissed point releases now, but in my head versions 4 5 and 6 should have gone 4, 4.1 and 4.2.
