    Windows 7 and 8 questions

    Hi,

I have been thinking of building a pc for the first time and wondering whether i should wait for Windows 8 to come out or just go for 7.

I will probably think about starting around xmas or just after but i'm in no real hurry.

I am not sure if i should get an OEM or retail version either. The thing is if the pc had a problem i'm not sure if i would be able to recover windows again should i not be able to fix a problem.

I read some posts in various forums but i got conflicting views so i was wondering if anyone would confirm what would happen with either retail or OEM versions should a pc break down for some reason.

    Thanks,

    Simon

There's no need to wait. OEM is much cheaper but is not transferable to another machine, otherwise it's identical. There treatment of a system failure is also identical. Are you referring to owning the discs ?
The responsibility in both systems to backup your data is yours.

    Hi,

I have to say i'm not familiar with backing up disks etc, i'm very much a beginner. I've heard about it though.

I remember Microsoft Windows 7 having a special offer prior to it's launch and was hoping i could wait and see if 8 had a similar offer you see.

So what is the treatment in regards to system failure Dr?

Depends on the failure. If it's a hardware failure then the OS is of no importance. If you can tell me what you're trying to foresee, I'll be better able to advise.

Re: Windows 7 and 8 questions

With OEM a hash of your hardware information is taken. When the hardware changes this hash changes. Certain components are weighted more then others....for instance, the motherboard has a huge weight.

Once the hash has changed to a certain extent, Windows will de-activate and you then need to call Microsoft who normally will re-activate it unless they feel you have flaunted the OEM agreement.

With Vista I re-activated OEMs a few times after motherboard swaps (I couldn't get a like-for-like mobo replacement)....but I did feel slightly fortunate.

I have since swapped to retail editions for peace of mind (I change hardware too much) but if you do not see yourself changing much, OEM is probably best.

Re: Windows 7 and 8 questions

    Thank you for both replying.

Phage, I just look at forums and see lots of problems.

Shaithis, this will be my the only pc i'll probably have for a long time. Last ones have all been pentium 4's,64mb graphics and 256 ram

I'll probably get OEM then but the prices don't seem that much in comparison from what i've seen. Maybe a £30 difference?

I don't know how to do the thanks thing yet but thanks both of you anyway.

You can't quite yet. You need a few more posts. If I remember correctly, it's about 5 as a minimum.

When you can, the button will appear, and it'll be down in the row with "quote", "edit", etc, under each post.

Re: Windows 7 and 8 questions

If Windows 8 follows 7 and offers a long duration release candidate demo, then I would opt for that over buying Windows 7. But when it will be available is another matter.

I hope the pre-order release pricing of Windows 8 follows 7 pricing, as fancy an upgrade.

Me too! I got a good price but, I think others got an even better price.
