    Dual Boot

So, I want to have a nice linux OS as well as my windows XP. To do this i'd have to dual boot obviously.

Debian is what i'm looking at but the problem is what i actually want to do.

I have an 80GB HDD in my shuttle (is this enough?). So, C:\ would be for Windows XP (6GB), D:\ would be for games and other data (15GB?). How many partitions do i need for linux? How would I acheive the install of both OS's?

    Ta

    3 partitions usually - 1 boot, 1 swap, and 1 root
A boot manager (LILO etc) will take care of the dual boot aspect

Well i've been reading up and the root partition only needs a gig so i reckon 2GB's for the root. Swap has to be half the amount of the RAM doesn't it? I'd probably allocate a gig just in case and for the boot i haven't got a clue.

I've currently got three partitions, one for WinXP, one for games and one for general stuff. I suppose I could format one of those partitions and the split them up for linux.

technically you only NEED a single partition for /, but swap is a lot faster if it has its own swap partition rather than a file. on my setup i have swap, a 36gb / parition, and a 28gb /tmp partition (I do a lot of DVD ripping, I need combustible temp space)

LILO or GRUB will both handle dual booting, or you can even get NTLDR to boot Linux with some jiggery-pokery

Ok well the problem i've got is creating the partitions for it. I haven't got a clue where to start, i'd have to delete all the logical drives and then delete the extension and then create an ickle extension followed by the extension for the linux partitions then throw the partitions inside of each extension :S

Well I managed by partitioning the drive with an extended Fat 32/ or unallocated partition in Partition magic and then installed linux on this. No need to bother with three seperate ext2 or swap partitions. This worked with Fedora anyway. It will recognise the Fat 32/unallocated partition when you install and will make the best use of the available space with a boot, root and swap partition. Just make sure you know what disk/partition it is talking about when it asks which to install onto

all me partitions are reiserfs fyi
er, if your northbridge fan is humming loudly, disconnect it. _dont_ kick the side of the case, it _will_ break it.
    i know :/
