Win 7 or free Win 8

    Hi guys,

So I'm pretty close to finishing my first proper custom build. I still haven't got hold of an OS yet.

So do you think it's wise from me to download the free copy of Win 8 and use that as my OS? Or would it be better to get hold of an official Win 7, probably home edition?

The current win 8 dev preview as your main and only OS, hell no.

free and beta are not the same thing. The beta will expire - what would you do then?

Ah right, cheers guys. I wasn't aware that it would expire eventually. Win 7 it is.

You would need to rerad the terms of the EULA very carefully before using a beta or evaluation copy of any software. As others have pointed out, it will expire eventually, it is only for evaluarion, and do you REALLY want your high end high performance rig running pre-production software that will certainly have bugs in it?

    No, I thought not!

This, from another software developer. Seriously. Don't run developer previews as your main OS. The Windows 8 build that's currently available isn't even a beta release. Be sensible, and stump up ~ £70 for Windows 7, which is actually a damn good OS...

Re: Win 7 or free Win 8

You should be ok for drivers - I have set Win8 up recently on a new "second" pc as the only operating system and everything worked a treat.

It does expire March 2012 which isn't far off - also being a beta you don't know if it will expire nicely - ie just give you a warning to download the latest beta or will it lock you out. So I guess it really depends how conifent you are with setups etc - if you set things up with all your data and folders on a second drive or partition you will be fine if you have to update things come March - if not you'd be better to shell out now for win7 and save yourself some headaches in a few months time.

as a test system to play around with win8 would be okay, but you wouldnt want it as your main system -Tim_UK1 made some good points.

As a main OS, no, but the temptation to tinker would get the better of me

I completely agree, subject to one proviso. If you only use that system for stuff you don't mind losing (even if it is a main and only machine), then ... why not try it?

But I'd do that only if there was nothing on the machine that mattered, and I'd work on the basis that I will lose everything, sooner or later. If I wasn't prepared to risk that (and few people are) then I agree, go Win 7.

I would definitely go with Windows 7 over a dev copy of Windows 8.
