    Windows 7 Install

Going to be installing Windows 7 possibly tomorrow onto my SSD (Crucial M4 128GB).

Was thinking of setting it up the same way I have my current drive setup with a partition for the OS (was thinking 60 or 68GB) and then the rest for use as games/other stuff. That way wouldn't loose as much data with a reinstall.

So just checking that this would still be best practice and also checking whether Windows 7 is like Vista in that ideally you don't install games in Program Files folder (I'm sure I read this somewhere no doubt made it up).

Otherwise I'll just leave it as one partition and install from there. Not overly bothered either way and no doubt it is just down to preference.

    Re: Windows 7 Install

With something as small as an SSD just keep it as one partition or you're wasting space by having too small spare space to be used.

Install games where you like - program files/program files x86 is a great place for them, but no problem if you chose somewhere else.

One partition, you won't lose any important data as it's backed up. It *is* backed up, right?

    Re: Windows 7 Install

Of course it is all backed up. Was just partitioned before for ease of reinstalling Windows. Will just put it all on one partition this time around though.

    Re: Windows 7 Install

Windows 7 can be a bit of a sod. If you use the "Previous Versions" feature youll find your drive fill up very quickly and 50gb can disappear quite quickly.

Personally I'd recommend one partition also. Keep only the OS and the apps you use most, or need to perform quickest on the SSD. Then add a 500gb HDD for the rest.

For me it's easy. OS and BF3 will be going on the SSD. All my other apps or games - I'm happy to deal with a few more seconds on load.

    Re: Windows 7 Install

Yeah, I have the OS, BF3, BF42 and stuff like Office & VLC on the SSD, all my documents and everything else is on the 1TB drive. Still runs quick enough though and no need to defragment either, which will take some getting used to...

    Re: Windows 7 Install

Agree - one partition. You'd waste lots of precious Gb of space keeping a decent buffer zone in both partitions.
