    Ubuntu External hard drive issue

So, I currently run ubuntu 11.04 and until yesterday everything was smooth running, I have an external hard drive currently plugged into firewire card in my pc, which connects to the firewire on the external drive, however yesterday when I booted up the drive was nowhere to be seen, even in disk utility it is not showing, tried switching to usb and still no look, but in Windows 7 the drive shows up fine with firewire, so any advice?

first thing, what file system is on it, I'm guessing NTFS if you're also using it in windows.

A common reason for this to not appear is due to the "needs checking block" being set on the disk.

Boot into windows, run chkdisk on it, then check it under Linux again.

If that fails, do a clean linux boot without the device in, tail the syslog, then plug the device in, it will give a clue as to if it see's the disk, or if it has a problem, from there you can move it forward, correct, the error, or if it does see it, try to mount it manually, see if you get an error there, correct it, or move onto the next, it's mounted, can you read it.... etc. Just work through the chain of events.
    It is Inevitable.....
