    Windows Explorer Alternatives

What recommendations do people have for more advanced file explorer alternatives? Looking for an improved file transfer manager, ftp, split windows stuff like that.

Things i have looked at so far are total commander and opus.

    Re: Windows Explorer Alternatives

It's usually Opus that gets the most recommendations on here. I've used it in the past, but always thought it was a little on the expensive side.

    Re: Windows Explorer Alternatives

at $85 (Aus) it is pretty damn expensive!

Good though, i have got the extended trial (90 days i think) and so far im really liking it. Do the free ones (or cheaper ones) offer much the same capability or is Opus really in a league of its own?

    Re: Windows Explorer Alternatives

You could use the Free Commander. It has all the function you are looking for and it's for free.

    Re: Windows Explorer Alternatives

sorry to revive an old thread. I have been using Opus for a while on one PC and free commander on another one.

Free Commander is ok, it doesn't offer a massive amount of functionality though, nowhere near as much as opus. The most important thing it is missing is the 'away from PC transfer' functionality of opus. So you can set the preffered transfer options and walk away from it nthen when you come back there is a report on what didnt work in the transfer.

Total commander does seem to have those options, and is generally a bit better allround than free commander. Bit horrible to look at though.

    $40 but very good.

Edit: there is a free version, certainly of v6 but I don't know how it compares.

Both look very good actually. Im doing ok with total commander but the interface is a bit nasty.

Not sure which one to try....

I use Total Commander for the last 10 years and strongly recommend it to anyone who needs a good file manager.

    Re: Windows Explorer Alternatives

Total Commander is not an explorer alternative... its a tool you open to do things. Take a look at Directory Opus which completely replaces explorer from Windows.
