    Cannot install SP1 on WS2008 R2

    OK,

I've been scratching my head a little at this one and can't suss it out.
Taking things back to basics, I have:

VMware ESXi Enterprise running on a set of HP BL460c G7 blade servers, all connected to some SAN storage.

    • HP OEM WS2008 R2 DataCenter ISO loaded into a VMFS DataStore.
    • Created a new VM, using all the default parameters, except adding the SMBIOS.reflectHost = true so it passes the HP hardware validation. Single ethernet card changed to VMXNET3.
    • Installed WS2008R2 booting from the ISO.
    • Installed VMware tools, then set up the NIC.
    • Joined the server to the domain.
    • Copied across the SP1 installer (windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe)
    • Ran the installer as administrator

As soon as I get to the the commit stage, it immediately exits stating "A system error prevented the service pack from installing". Error code is 0x8007000d.

Did a quick search and can't find anything obvious.

CBS log file in case anyone's bored and wants to be my hero is here!

    Re: Cannot install SP1 on WS2008 R2

Checksum of downloaded file (0xae27c171) does not match expected (0xaca82919) er=0xd

Download it again, perhaps within the VM, or compare the checksum in & out of the VM & with a new downloaded copy. My windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe is (via nirsoft's hashmyfiles):

    MD5: 28d3932f714bf71d78e75d36aa2e0fb8
    SHA1: 74865ef2562006e51d7f9333b4a8d45b7a749dab
    CRC32: 068c79c6

    Or, do a memtest86.

The only other thing I can see is the shadow copy creation failure, which you could perhaps investigate with vssadmin (google it). Dunno if that would trigger this error though. Do you also have sufficient free HDD space?

    Re: Cannot install SP1 on WS2008 R2

loads of HDD space, although it's thin provisioned.
I'm now downloading the ISO version, will see if it's any different. I was wondering about an CRC error...

    will report back tomorrow.

    Thanks mate

    Re: Cannot install SP1 on WS2008 R2

Well, the downloaded ISO image of the DVD appears to be working like a charm.

I should have guessed the corrupt file before. I was just surprised because I thought that all SP did a checksum check first to ensure they were OK before attempting to install...

    Thanks again, smargh

Turned it off and ... oh wait.

I gotta upgrade our vSphere Server to 5 at some point.
