Wordpress Video gallery - any suggestions

    Hi All,

I have a web server at home and I am using it to host a Wordpress blog. I have been looking for a plugin that lets me host video. I have lots of movies of my children and would like to share them with friends/family without uploading them to youtude etc. I've tried a few plugins but none seem to be much good.

Does any one have any recommendations?

    Thanks for your help.

Re: Wordpress Video gallery - any suggestions

Well, I tried a number of wordpress plugins, most of which are not very good. So I gave up on using a plugin.

I then decided to write my own html and that was ok. However I had encoded my videos in flash and of course my brother uses an iPad and flash does not work. I then read this page video_for_everybody. It describes the problem that is delivering video to various platforms. Using html5 you can provide a link to a video in one format and then provide fallback links to the same video in different formats. So, default format is mp4, with the fallback formats of ogg and flash.

This of course means you have to encode your video in each format which takes time and takes up more disk space. My webserver is at home so I have plenty of diskspace, though the same cannot be said for my internet bandwidth.

This link will generate the code for you. All you need to do is supply the path to the videos.

Might be a bit late to the party on this post but I've heard http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/...eryversion-10/ is ok although I've not used it myself.
I normally use a third party site like YouTube to host the video and use the embed code from there -post it straight in to a post. i guess it depends on what privacy you might want on the videos though.

    1. Don't host your videos for streaming on site. I have a 30mb Virgin connection and even with about a solid 1mbps upload nothing streams at a good enough quality, as soon as 2 people want to use the web media it pretty much grinds to a halt thanks to bandwidth exhaustion. Unless you have some magic T1/JANET connection it's really not worth it

    2. Why not use a third party site? A youtube account will let you make the videos private so you can just share the link with those that you want to see the video

Thanks Chinny. I'll try it out.

As you have both pointed out, the upload bandwidth is low. I have Virgin 10Mb which has a 1Mb upload speed. So the videos can take a bit of time to load. I'll look at youtube again.

    Thanks
