    XP SP2 RC2 Link

On my recent trawl through the net came accross the link to RC2 off the MS site, doesn't require a sign in or anything. Not sure how long MS will keep it up there either.

Remember this is BETA software and could mess your system up, if in doubt, DON'T try it. Oh and don't come running here! As far as I can see its not warez, and off a legitamate site.

    Its 265MB big.

I've had it for a while now - I keep it up to date.

However, I turned the firewall off (have a hardware one) and don't use IE, so half the updates are no use!

I will however be slipstreaming the final version.

Yeah me too, it makes sense to slipstream it. Even though you have a hardware one, a software firewall stops and notifies you of stuff going out which is what I use it for.

Yeah, I've had many a discussion about that. I've never had problems with not having one - and get far less networking hassle as a result. It's good that it's there though, and seems far better than the original attempt.

Thats cause they have made it available to the general public i.e. you dont need to be a beta tester cause its an RC release.

Supposedly the firewall is made by a major firewall company (or at least developed by them) so it should be quite good.

Unfortunately you can bet that a huge number of users will disable it as they'll start to have problems running their favourite spyware-infested P2P client or something.

Even though it comes up and recommends twice that you really, really want this feature enabling, I'm sure plenty will just click "no".

It would be nice to trust users to act responsibly, but I'm far too cynical to believe that.

Anyone tried the beta version of Windows Update 5 yet?

    From readmesp.htm:
1.1 List of Fixes in Service Pack 2
To help you decide whether you should update your operating system to SP2, Microsoft provides extensive documentation about the fixes that are available in this service pack. For details about the fixes included in SP2, and for a list of files that are affected by it, see Microsoft Windows XP Post-SP1 Fixes.

I've been using it ever since I put SP2 on. It works nicely - took me a while to get used to it.

I haven't used express install because I don't trust it, but I imagine that it will make life easier (although auto-update is just as good a route too.)

if you download the beta version, will you just be able to install over the top or will a fresh install be required?

The release candidate is itself being updated a lot - so there won't be any problems I don't think. You will probably also be able to install over the top of the RC, however if you're kept it up to date it probably won't be necessary.

I'm quite pleased with the RC2 build - quite nice, picks up my a/v software quite cheerfully, and the firewall isn't nearly as invasive as others I've seen around.
