Installed fixed uxtheme.dll on my secondary PC which has been running SP2 RC2 for a while, seems to work fine.

Installation process that doesn't require safe mode:

Download the RAR file and extract the DLL within it to C:\

Log in as a user with full administrative rights

Click Start / Run and enter cmd to get a DOS prompt

Type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each:
    cd \
    ren \windows\servicepackfiles\i386\uxtheme.dll *.old
    copy uxtheme.dll \windows\servicepackfiles\i386
    ren \windows\system32\dllcache\uxtheme.dll *.old
    copy uxtheme.dll \windows\system32\dllcache
    ren \windows\system32\uxtheme.dll *.old
    copy uxtheme.dll \windows\system32
    exit

If you get prompted about Windows File Protection wanting the Service Pack CD inserting, just click Cancel to keep the current file - it only comes up once with this warning.

Now you can delete the DLL file you left in C:\, and restart Windows and you should be able to use your own themes.

(If you have trouble opening the RAR file, get WinRAR from www.rarlabs.com)

For those interested in what the commands do, you are renaming the 3 copies of the original SP2 RC2 uxtheme.dll file to uxtheme.old, then copying in the fixed one to replace them.
It has to be done this way as you can't overwrite the files directly as they are in use - but it does let you rename them.
Once you reboot it will load the fixed uxtheme.dll file and have full access to use your own themes.
