    Data Recovery Software

A friend of mine has come to me with a Hard Drive that he "accidentaly" formatted. I'm not sure what he was trying to do to arrive at this situation but what is done is done!

He wants me to see if I can retrieve his Video and picture files from it somehow, as their mostly of his family and holidays etc. I found software called "EaseUS" (I would post the URL but I don't ahve sufficent posting rights, a simple google search for "Easeus" shows it as the top result) Which I thought would work, however when running it it looks like its going to take over 200 hours just to scan for the files, this doesn't include recovery time, thus making this an unusable approach.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any reliable software that will do the job of recovering the video and image files, preferably not taking longer than a day or 2 for the whole thing? The hard Drive is 1TB and was approximately 70% full at the time of the "format" and is a Seagate Barracuda 7200 SATA if that makes any difference.

Thanks for any help or advice in advance,
    Paul.

    Re: Data Recovery Software

Whatever you do don't write to the drive (unlikely as it has been formatted) as it increases your chances of success.

I would stick it in a USB adapter or add it to your own PC using sata connections then boot from something like UBCD for Windows CD and use the file recovery software available from that.

    Re: Data Recovery Software

I've made sure no new data was written to it, I have a reasonable amount of knowledge myself (thus why he brought it to me I suppose) So I think I'm safe from doing any more damage (I think! ) It's plugged into my machine now on a spare SATA port.

I'll download that software you recommended and see what it turns up and report back if I require further assistance, thank you.

Edit: I've noticed its a 200+ MB download, as I've recently moved house and am using a Dongle until tomorrow evening when the proper internet is installed, I don't have available bandwidth to download that at the moment, I shall report back in a couple of days!

    Re: Data Recovery Software

You can always google for some data recovery software and install it on your PC then access his HD that way - it will be a smaller download. Most of them give a try before you buy option (Get Data Back rings a bell as being quite good.)

I can recommend PC Inspector File Recovery, it's made by German data recovery company Convar and has done the job for me/friends on a few occasions. Only a 3MB download too. link

    Re: Data Recovery Software

    Try Testdisk/PhotoRec. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Main_Page

File recovery isn't a quick process - it will take as long as it takes. If anything has been written to the drive since the format, there's a chance you'll have lost files. If only a quick format was applied, then NOTHING was written, Testdisk may be able to recover the partition table and all the original files which should be the faster option. If not, Photorec should be able to recover any intact files. If possible, clone the drive bit-for-bit to a spare drive and try the above methods on the copy, leaving the original intact, in case anything goes wrong.

    Re: Data Recovery Software

the advice given about is all sound. I've used recuva once or twice and had no problems thankfully.

Was going to advise you to stick it in your own pc/ a usb caddy, but re-reading the above, blueball said just that.

    Re: Data Recovery Software

In case you have lost your important data just due to partition deletion, partition damage, or MBR loss, then there is no need to get stressed. This is because; now you have like Kernel for Windows Data Recovery software.
