Word-Help with removing unwanted spaces in text

My daughter has written an essay which contains some pictures as well as text. The line spacing is set to 1.5. She removed some text from the document and now there are large white spaces between the text. Not the line spacing. If one goes to the end of the text before the unwanted space and clicks delete the space disappears but if one clicks return to create a new paragraph the space returns. The doc was written using word 2007. I am sure this is something fairly simple to solve. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

In the paragraph settings dialog make sure that spacing before/after is not set to auto.

CTRL SHIFT 8 - see what the non-printing characters are, if any - easier to delete
same shortcut to turn off the display of those chars

highlight offending text and CTRL SHIFT N = reset that text to Normal style / get rid of bad formatting

Also, re paragraphs, what is the current spacing AFTER a paragraph?

    No non printing characters.

Spacing after paragraph is set to 10pt. The issue does not affect all paragraphs

Re: Word-Help with removing unwanted spaces in text

probably not all paragraphs have the same spacing then. Usually it should be set to zero.

Easiest would then to select all (CTRL A) and change the spacing-after-paragraph setting to zero

Re: Word-Help with removing unwanted spaces in text

Thanks for the reply. I have tried setting the spacing-after-paragraph setting to zero but this still does not rectify the issue

Re: Word-Help with removing unwanted spaces in text

It could be a setting relating to the images she has included; white space around etc.

Re: Word-Help with removing unwanted spaces in text

You could have a look at the styles inspector, this tells you what formatting has been applied:

    • Highlight a piece of offending text/picture
    • Click on the arrow in the bottom right corner of the Styles section on the Home tab
    • There are three buttons at the bottom of the Styles window that opens
    • The middle one is the Styles Inspector which tells you what formatting is applied and gives the options to clear or modify

Might help to identify the culprit.
