    Folding vs Donations

I am looking at starting up folding again but at the same time I am now wondering if its worth donating the money that I would be spending on electricity (and the profits the power companys make!) directly to charity. Its a tough one but I think giving the money directly and telling the power company to stick it may be better.

    What do you think?

I resent the inflated salaries that are paid to the charities, most of whom are based in the financial districts of our countries, so when I found out about folding it seemed a good match - with our family recently (in the last 5 years) having occurrences of Cancer and Dementia this seemed the best way for me to participate.

Salaries are very top loaded in our businesses, so for Charities to compete they have to attract the best people, which means more cash is spent on administering their businesses. If they are going to be operated as businesses then they should be funded and taxed as businesses.

Not so much fun in the summer though... I remember bitcoin mining in 40+C very well

The other thing to bear in mind is the hassle setting it all up, monitoring the client and fixing it if it ever goes wrong. Presumably you would ascribe some value to that, which could also go towards charity.

    Re: Folding vs Donations

I guess it depends on whether you have a machine running just for folding (and leave it running 24x7 for that purpose) or if you just have the folding process running in the background while you are using the machine for something else.

    Re: Folding vs Donations

Donating would be a more efficient use of the money - economies of scale etc. dictate that with the same money you're doing things, someone else could do more if they were already set up to do it efficiently. Assuming there's no significant overhead on the donating itself.

The other thing is that by donating you allow the experts to put the money where it'll be put to the best use - if lack of compute power was really holding back the research then they'd be best place to take measures to address that themselves. On the other hand if contributing to an additional researcher or PhD project would have a bigger outcome they'd be able to do that with a donation.

The flipside of the coin is that you're not just donating electricity when you're folding, you're donating time on the rest of the computer's hardware with you having fully met the capital. Granted, that hardware will largely be unimportant for the folding, but you're still providing time on it free.
