Best Way to setup a new SSD system

    Hi,

I've just ordered a 60GB SSD and will be putting Win7 Home on it. I will then have 2 * 250GB SATA HDs for storage and I'm just planning the best way to set things up.

The obvious choice seems to be using the SSD for the O/S & my most used/most intensive applications. I'm guessing Win7 is going to take up at least 10GB, so after I've installed my main programs and a few games that space will disappear fast.

Is there anything else to take into consideration?

On a side note, I've always wondered if you get issues by installing programs on a separate disk to the O/S (with regards to registry files etc.) If I had to format the O/S drive, would there be any problems running the programs on the other disk?

Re: Best Way to setup a new SSD system

This is probably not particularly helpful, but personally I'd send it back and get one at least twice the size. More than one of my friends who've bought a 60GB SSD regretted it shortly afterwards when they came up against constant space limitations that are possible to work around but tedious to do so. As you say, 60 GB doesn't get you very far these days, particularly if you enjoy a bit of gaming.

I hear ya, but I'm on tight budget at the moment so this was all I could afford. The way I see it I'll enjoy the benefit of faster O/S loading times along with a few key apps. The rest isn't going to be any slower than it is on my current system.

Probably by the time I buy my next system SSDs of a decent size will have come down drastically.

I opted for the intel 120gb ssd. Only now I've found out about the 8mb issue but hopefully that's been resolved via firmware updates. I've heard far worse about the OCZ ssds.

I'll probably run one or two games on the ssd and all my key programs like Photoshop and media players but most of my games will probably be run off a HDD if all it does is reduce load times.

    What's the 8mb issue?

I went with a Corsair 60GB Force 3A so hope there's no problems with it.

Re: Best Way to setup a new SSD system

I'm not clued up on SSDs so forgive me, I've only just ordered the parts to build a new system, been working on a mac for the last few years

From what I've read the intels are generally deemed very reliable out of all the brands which is why I went for them. The 8mb issue is when it would only recognise the ssd as having 8mb capacity as opposed to however many gb it's supposed to be. I think the problem tied in to when the computer went into sleep mode. It is however apparently sorted now via a firmware update. Fingers crossed anyway.

I've not heard whether corsair has any probs but the main problems with OCZ and the like is apparently the sandforce controllers they use to gain max read and write speeds. I've heard of many failing which is why I stayed away.

Re: Best Way to setup a new SSD system

the way is use my 64gb is ihae windows 7 proffesional on it nd then go M$ office and photoshop on it all my liberys and so on are on a separate 1tb drive called media nd linked that way (easy to set up in windows 7) then i have another hdd 1tb hdd witch i have partitioned into 2 one half for program instalation so all you have to do when installing a program change the drive location change the c: to g: for example, then on the other half i have games installed onto wich same process during instalation change the desination from c: to h:, thats how i have it set up and works perfect for me whole windows boots up fast nd is snappy and photoshop nd ms word etc boot up in no time compared to what it did when installed onot a hdd, i just love that drive array, ohh and if anything goes wrong i got a spare hdd with windows 8 installed atm but its always good to have a back way into your files incase windows 7 decides to die

i got the corsair 64gb c300 and never had a problem, awesome ssd would buy another one its a yr old now nd still as gd as day 1
