GIMP is good.

GIMP, or Paint.Net. It really depends on what you're looking for.
A lot of people swear they need everything that Photoshop gives them, but very few non-pros need the full version. If you prefer to stick to Photoshop then Elements gives you pretty much all you are likely to need for a fraction of the cost.
I tend to use paint.NET, but as Splash says it depends on which features you need. I've never actually used photoshop, so I can't really comment on how "like" PS either paint.net or gimp is. But, since they're both free, you can always download them and give them a go![]()
Does Paint.net work on Mac?
I'd recommend Raw Therapee + the GIMP, though I did treat myself to Lightroom recently - for a lot of photo work it has the right tools, if I need layer work then I go to the GIMP.
Ah, no, probably not.
I always tend to conflate Adobe and Apple and it hadn't occurred to me that the OP would be talking about OS X alternatives to Adobe products *doh*![]()
Paint.Net works on modern macs, you just need to upgrade the OS first.
Raw Therapee as mentioned is really rather good!

Depends what you're after. What you want to do with it, and how (if anything) the budget is.
GIMP is, as said, one option, and free.
Adobe Lightroom will do a lot of what a lot of people need in the way of editing, but has nowhere near the pixel-editing capabilities of Photoshop. And isn't free. It's around the £100 mark. But it has excellent import, database and management features.
Or Adobe Elements is kind-of Photoshop lite, for consumers, rather than edit-heavy pro's or the design industry, which is Photoshop's natural territory.
Or there's the editing packages from ACDSee. Again, not free, but a LOT cheaper than Photoshop.
And many more.
I'm still using Paint Shop Pro 8 at work, although it's only good for RGB work (i.e. digital content only). It's CMYK support (for printed media) is none existent.
My recommended version of it is v9 and can be downloaded here:

After v9, corel took over the program and heavily bloated it and make a lot of the editing features less intuitive.
Anyone used Aftershop Pro?
I used to rate PSP back in the day, the day of 16bit.

I'm surprised with this being the OS X section that no one has mentioned Pixelmator, it's pretty cheap on the App Store, and is as close as you can get to a PS clone.

This. I used PSP 6 extensively when I first got into web design. I've got a license for PSP Photo X (or whatever daft name they gave it) and it was much more bloated and less intuitive to use (although my wife got on very well with it for the 6 months she was working as a marketing coordinator). I don't think it offers an awful lot over paint.NET though, and Corel's support is a bit pants.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm a student (well for the next few months) and wanted something cheap. And being new to OSX I'm not familiar with the best software. I'll give Pixelmator a try, seems affordable!
Pixelmator £20.99
Photoshop Elements 10 £34.99
Which is better value for money?
