    Outlook XP - Lan/Modem

    Hi.

I am setting up a laptop for a user here at work. Everything is fine except one thing.

I am trying to setup outlook XP so that the user can check for mail using the modem when at home and use the lan when at work.

In settings I have set it to.. "check email using LAN connection" and have also ticked the.. "and use modem if working offline". When I click send/recieve when the lan is plugged in it works no probs, when i take the network cable out (or even boot the laptop without the network connection) and click send/recieve it just moans about not being able to see the mailserver, it doesn't even try to use the modem.

This is very annoying, because in previous versions of outlook instead of "and use modem if working offline" it has "and use modem if no lan present". If I click File > Work offline and then do a send/recieve it opens the modem promt and I can dial in.

Basically I do not want to (read: want the user to have to) click work offline each time he wants to check his email when at home. Can I make outlook XP think its working offline if there is no LAN present?

    Cheers.

so I'm guessing you're using exchange, and you have configured the lappy with vpn access to your servers.... etc...

two options here - either you choose to manually choose connection state on startup (so it's not using the 30 second timeout) then "when working offline" connection method on the third tab, use dial-up

this is provided of course, they're connected over vpn, and can correctly resolve the global catalog server (which outlook requires for exchange access) you can do it without vpn, but does expose your exchange server to significant security risks!

I would personally give them OWA and IMAP4 access - it's far easier and safer.

Cheers for the reply. and sorry I should have said, we arent using exchange, we have a RAS arrangement and they connect to the box through pop3 on its internal IP address.

yes -= checked it out at home, I'd just use when working offline, dialup using internet explorer dialler - only way you can do it, and set the ras connection as the default dialler - if you're using an internal proxy server then it's that much easier again.

it's not that elegant, but should work fine.

yeah - it's annoying, there's no intelligent method of doing it -
it should theoretically pop up immediately if you're not connected to the network, but otherwise you can decrease the poll time to find the server
