    Clean install the best bet?

My flatmate has been given a PC, some form of Novatech jobby, 1gig 386 meg of ram, basic system but it’s crammed with applications and programs plus loads of half uninstalled programs that I will have to remove by hand. There is an awful lot in the start-up and the machine takes ages to boot and runs like a lemon..

I said to my friend that a reinstall will be the best bet what do you reckon? Only takes 30mins or so with xp, can you just whack the cd in the drive and then boot from cd and install over the top after a format?

Depends on how confident you are about finding drivers for it.

If you're going to reinstall, look in the software sticky - theres a good util for pulling out all the currently installed hardware drivers. Also remember that if he suddenly remembers his valuable photo collection was on the machine, your the one that formatted it. The 3 most important rules in IT are: Backup, Backup and Backup

thanks Jiff, i *.jpg and *.doc and found a few files he may need, i will check out the sticky but due to the age of the computer i reckon they should all work with XP, there is not even one card on the pci... just a bulk standard comp..

Clean install is always the best bet!

You should be able to just boot from WinXP CD, go in, slect the c drive, format it and hey presto your off!
