Win SP1 problems
Im upgrading a friends laptop with Win 7 32bit HP for her birthday.
I did the mainm install no worries, but then I grabbed a copy of SP1 off MS site and started installing that.
Its been going since midday today (now 10 past 6). It went thru installing all the KB parts OK, then rebooted and its stuck at 9%, again. It got as far as 14% then rebooted, and its now sat at 9%.
Its an older laptop, an Acer with a 1.75GHz cpu and 512MB 266MHz RAM.
Any thoughts ? Or should I cut my losses and start again from scratch and forget the SP1 ?

Re: Win SP1 problems
Why didn't you just get SP1 through Windows Update?

Re: Win SP1 problems
512MB of DDR1 RAM probably isn't enough for W7 tbh, it'll get by, but it'll be pretty damn slow :(

Re: Win SP1 problems
First off, the laptop seems way too old man. Have you checked the drive?
Check the SMART tab in HD Tune

Re: Win SP1 problems
I would seriously question Windows 7 usability even on 1GB of RAM...
My install with Word 2007 and a web browser open eats up 3GB for breakfast!

Re: Win SP1 problems
wow, what did she do to pee you off..
basically as the others have said, its not up to having win7 and even though you went in with the best intentions you have now caused a mess and the only way out is to stick what i expect is XP back on it and apologise.
remember the old rule, if it ain't broke leave it alone.

Re: Win SP1 problems
Aye beginning to think that. SP1 finally gave up and it reverted. It's stable, if slow, on Win7, so I'll leave it as is for now and if she complains that it's too slow, then I'll go back to XP.
