Windows 7 32bit Professional - post SP1 application only boots into repair mode.

    I have a Windows 7 professional 32bit desktop.

Consisting of an asrock board, core2duo 1.8ghz with 2GB of ram.

it is fully patched / working and genuine up to Windows 7 service pack 1.

Every time I apply service pack 1 from either Windows update , or downloaded direct from microsoft to the second hard disk the service pack applies success fully, no errors, the machine reboots, goes through the 3 stages of applying the service pack updates, completes, reboots again and then boots straight into the recovery mode options (not safe mode but the recovery tools).

I posted some details on the microsoft official answers forum.

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...4-a9e5f3ef02e5

I've followed the advice on this forum thread.

I've verified the problem with 4 clean installs and patch to SP1.

I've used the "update rediness tool" which installed with no warnings, I've done a clean boot process, all firewalls are disabled and there i no antivirus running.

The key issue is that when the machine reboots into repair mode and trys to fix (it can't) the error message

    problem event name: StarupRepairOffline

    Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385

    Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385

    Problem Signature 03: unknown

    Problem Signature 04: 21200210

    Problem Signature 05: AutoFailover

    Problem Signature 06: 4

    Problem Signature 07: CorruptFile

    OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1

    Locale ID: 1033
I'd be very open to suggestions and any resolutions as I can't not patch this machine to Service pack 1 or beyond going forward.

On the off chance have you tried running the service pack update with only one stick of ram in the machine (unless that is not possible)

While not directly related to the above i was having issues with a game (Starcraft II) that would fail to patch - the game would run but if i tried to patch it to the latest this would fail.

Tracked the issue to a faulty stick of ram - replaced and no issues since.

    Worth a shot ?

have you used msconfig to disable startup items & services to try and pin it down ?

I think the fact that hes done a clean install ruled that out - seems a very odd issue :/

not at all, if windows in its infinate wisdom is installing a driver or conflicting with one that installs with the initial install, its always the 1st thing i try with cases like this.

if it will boot to safe mode then msconfig will allow him to pin down the issue.

Re: Windows 7 32bit Professional - post SP1 application only boots into repair mode.

it will not boot into safe mode, it will only boot into reapair mode.

before I installed the service pack I was doing a "clean boot" so that the initial install was done in a clean boot enviornment, but obviously after the initial install the service pack needs to reboot and I have no control of what it boots at that point, and I can't do anything about it as it refuses to boot anything but recovery mode at that point.

I would suggest trying to get hold of a Windows 7 SP1 disc and just install that way.

Re: Windows 7 32bit Professional - post SP1 application only boots into repair mode.

I guess StarupRepairOffline is a typo and not poor spelling in some malware.
I had similar troubles before a drive failure. I reinstalled and updated Windows because my PC was becoming sluggish. I found myself in a boot to recovery loop. A second PC showed the drive to appear fine but it started to click loudly and died soon after.
Try disconnecting your second hard drive (and any other hard drives plus unneeded peripherals) and run the service pack from from your main drive or an optical disk.
Does your Windows disk install any third-party rubbish that you could remove before installing SP1?
What happens if you try to repair the installation?

Re: Windows 7 32bit Professional - post SP1 application only boots into repair mode.

when this problem occured, I was only using one disk.

I put the second disk in to hold some tools/data to help trying to debug this (such as downloading SP1 to a seperate hard disk rather than using Windows update, taking a backup image etc).

I've tried two seperate hard disks stand alone and the problem re-occurs, this is why the machine now has a second hard disk in to try to get some better debugging/process out of this.

I'll have a sniff around trying to get a Winows 7 SP1 install disk from somewhere, I looked at slipsteaming software last night but it doesn't appear possible or as easy as it used to be with Windows XP.

Excellent. Did you burn your own disk or use pre-made one, say, from a magazine cover?
