    Windows 7 losing wireless connection

I recently installed Windows 7 (64bit) on a new PC and the wireless connection seems to drop every now and then (and sometimes struggle to connect at start up all together). I've tried two wireless adapters, a USB one and a PCI-E one and the same occurs.

My mobile phone (android) keeps the wireless connection in the same room (even on the floor where the PC is) without a problem. My thinkpad (XP) keeps the wireless connection, again in the same room and on the floor where the PC is without problem. I've even installed the USB wireless adapter on the thinkpad just to test and it was fine too.

I briefly (very briefly) had Windows 8 on the PC and as far as I can tell, the USB adapter was fine too, I didn't have the PCI-E card at this time.

So with all tests, I can only really see that Windows 7 is the consistent factor where I am having problems.

I've googled it and seen the same said from other people, but as it stands I've not come across a working solution.

    Has anyone had the same?

    Ta

any chance you have a wireless manager installed? possibly software that came with the adaptor, causes havoc with Vista and 7
We're only here for the Banter - The Luvvies - Chewin' The Fat

Violence and Lubrication is the solution to fixing everything, if it still doesn't work, you need more lubrication.

Hey Dareos, nopes, just the drivers. No wireless manager for either adapter.

Re: Windows 7 losing wireless connection

I've not seen it on any of the Window 7 computers I've built/used sorry.

Guesses would be along the lines of power management - there are options to power down wireless devices when not in use etc. - both in the device management properties and windows power schemes. Slow to connect on start up could be because windows 7 defers services and possibly driver loading to avoid creating I/O bottlenecks on start up. Check wireless related services are on automatic in services.msc (and not deferred) etc.

You might also have some luck reserving an IP address for the windows 7 computer - it gets a bit fussy when another computer is assigned the IP it was expecting (nothing serious, just delays again, and it can be bumped off if it enters sleep etc. I guess). You could also set a fixed channel from the router and tell the wireless device to default to this channel.

Thanks Kalniel, I'll give it a look tonight.

Just did some more searching on google and there's something really odd about seeing this thread towards the top of the results already!

Not using D-Link hardware are you by any chance?

I've the same issue with my mums PC which is currently using the D-Link DWA-140 which needs to be unplugged if her PC is left unattended for a period of time.
