Installing Vista Home Premium to new HDD

I've got some frustrating issues with installing Vista Home Premium on to a replacement/new hard drive...
The basic installation appeared to have completed without too many issues, but the system and screen freezes within a minute or two of loading up

Except for the new hard drive, the rest of the hardware has remained unchanged (although I removed the PCI graphics card in an attempt to track down the source of the problem).

It seems that either Windows itself, or a driver etc may be causing the problem...

Thankfully I've managed to get the system running reliably in Safe Mode, which seems to confirm it's not a hardware issue??

edit: screenshot of system properties, if this helps

Vista pre SP1 has problems installing with over 4GB, could that be your problem?

    Edit - 2GB not 4

Well I recently upgraded the system from 2 strips of 1Gb, to 2 strips of 2Gb, so it's a possibility

Re: Installing Vista Home Premium to new HDD

edit: the system has been running in "normal" Windows for the past 45 minutes (using only one strip of RAM) and everything seems to be stable so far.

I'm cautiously optimistic, but it looks like you've identified the problem for me!

The system still needs loads of updates, and a partial rebuild/refitting of components, but I think can finally breathe a sigh of relief for the first time in about a week!!!
