Help: I have an idea for a game

Yep, I'm another person with no technical/development skills that has an idea about a game I'd like to see. So how do I get this idea in front of a developer, an indie or main stream name, I don't really mind, just as long as it's someone that can realistically look at my idea and tell me if there's any merit behind the concept and then either take it forward or point me towards someone that can run with it?

In short: Make it yourself or it won't happen.

If you think it's a killer idea then it's worth the vast expense and time training how to do that yourelf. If you don't think it's worth that personal cost you to, then it won't be worth perusing to anyone else either. Ideas are, sadly, cheap.

That's a really good article (as he mentions, read lesson 1 too).

For an idea of how hard it is to get your idea funded, a team of people from the games industry with years of experience on high profile games were not able to get their idea made through the traditional channels, and just about made their target for fund raising on kickstarter.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

    This

That said.. I did invest in Wasteland 2 outside of kickstarter (directly via paypal to avoid iffy amazon currency conversion)

Kickstarter's funny in that respect though - Rich Burlew, author of Order of the Stick, raised $1.25M on his when all he wanted to do was reprint the comics. Being tied into a popular franchise - even a niche one - really helps. So, if you have a great idea for a game, could you tie it into a popular but niche market/franchise? So perhaps you need to be talking, not to gaming studios, but to creative IP owners...

    Just a thunk

Re: Help: I have an idea for a game

Sorry, I've been away on a conference and quite literally didn't get any time to go online and check the forums, what with activity all day and everyday and gatherings for meals and social activity every evening.

@Mblaster: I'll have a read of the article over the next few days, I need a shower, some food and a rest, I ache all over after doing a team building day at Adrenalin.

    Thanks for the replies.

Re: Help: I have an idea for a game

If you have any programming experience whats so ever you could attempt to do it in C# with XNA.

As has been said in other posts getting your idea in front of the right people is no easy task, and even then those people have many ideas put in front of them all day. Most of the AAA games companies have 'think tanks' churning out ideas all the time. The amount of games that actually go into development only to be scrapped by some guy in marketing who decides that he does not feel is going to make enough and that losses should be cut sooner then later to start on some other project is rather scary.

I know there are several forum communities out there for indie game developers, programmers, audio and graphics.

You might be able to attempt to approach some people on there. As you do not have any technical skills as you say, perhaps you have some other skills you could offer, such as animation, or other graphics, perhaps audio production skills. If so then it may be easier to form a collaboration with someone from one of those communities.

Don't give up on your idea, but be aware that ideas are 'rather cheap' so to say as everyone has some idea that they feel could or should be the next big thing.

Re: Help: I have an idea for a game

I'm a little late for the party, but my answer is: friends.

You probably have some gaming friends, ask them what they think of the idea. If you have someone who can program, even better. If they think the idea is good, they might want to implement it.
