I've bought two decent Phillips headsets and neither have worked. A friend said it's because if you have Windows XP, there's this software you have to install. Does anybody know what this software is?

Probably a USB driver. Depends on what headset you have.
Society's to blame,
Or possibly Atari.
Is the headset connection USB or does it have 2 separate 3.55mm plugs for the microphone & headphones?
If you have plugged it in at the front of the computer, try the relevant ports on the back instead.
If the headset is USB make sure you selected it in Control Panel/Sound and Audio Devices/Audio. If the USB headset isn't listed Sound playback/recording, then Windows is likely missing the drivers.

Check the Phillips website for any drivers for your model of headset if it's USB. If it's not, then plug other things into the 3.5mm ports if you can to confirm they're working.
Hopefully, you could resolve your problem.
