    Arrrrgh - Filename recovery??

Hey peeps, wondering if anyone has a reliable way of recovering filenames?
Partition magic managed to mangle a couple of directories worth of files and now there's about 600 files named like:

    DAZ3D -
    DAZ3D -.-00
    DAZ3D -.-01
    DAZ3D -.-02
    DAZ3D -.-03

Most of them are zips, exe's or jpg's etc I've scoured PM for a cure, then tried norton utilites etc, but no joy.

Is there any software about that will recover the old filenames or am I going to have to have fun later trying to rename them all by hand?

If norton wont find them, and youve been repartitioning, id say its fairly safe to bet that you'll be renaming them yourself

You could try norton unformat, but that could make things worse in some cases. If you do go down this route, make sure you back everything up.

All I did was convert from ntfs to fat32 so I could have somewhere to access some utilities on a dos-boot..

When I converted it back again the files were still smegged

Converting from FAT32 to NTFS wont give you any real benefits speed or storage wise as the cluster size is set the the same as FAT 32, and is probably not suitable for your drive.
You will still get the encryption/file permission benefits though.
Also if you just wanted to convert to NTFS for that reason, you should have used the windows command line tool to do it, and not partition magic.
At the command prompt, you would simply do:

    C:\> CONVERT C: /fs:ntfs

and that would convert it from FAT32 to NTFS without the hassle of partition magic.
