    windows explorer -> tools -> folder options -> view -> "use simple file sharing (recommended)" ... untick it

    mmc is what you maybe talking about

    i don't think you can get to some of the msc plugins on xp home, as i said.

    &
    mmc command just brings up a blank console root box.

    try this, but not sure if home supports it

    Click on Start
    Then Run
    Type MMC and hit enter
    Click CONSOLE then ADD/REMOVE SNAP IN
    Click ADD then LOCAL USERS AND GROUPS
    Click ADD then FINISH
    Then just keep click OK or CLOSE until your back to the first window you saw when you typed MMC and you can play around from there.

    Cheers dozer, it was so close! , - but alass, when i clicked finish, damn windows poped up a box saying this version of windows operating system is not allowed to access this etc etc.. Really thought that we'd cracked it when i saw local users & groups in the add list, but it was not to be lol I should of got pro.. damn me and my money saving ways Anyway, was still a brill idea dozer.

    if you can load the original installation files (the i386 folder from a cd) to a formatted hard disk, you can boot an msdos disk and run setup from there

    otherwise, you're stuffed

    If doing it via DOS, you'll need to run "winnt.exe" IIRC, not the standard "setup.exe" as you might expect.
