    Need a better chkdsk (rapid!)

Oh the irony, it seems the comprehensive backups I've been making today have nackered my C:\ drive.

Chkdsk is having a hard time of it all, so are there any alternatives out there? Freeware would rock!

I'm limping along right now thanks to NTFS sort of coping with it all, but the sooner I get this sorted the better.

    Cheers,
    Kez.

PS, the error, isn't it nice?

How about getting the drive manufacturer's hard drive tool? Seagate definately have them, and I'm sure IBM/Hitachi do too...should tell you whether it's the HDD that's forked or not...
    Well Hello!

Matey, the recovery console chkdsk bombs out, let alone boot-time chkdsk!

Anyway it's not a problem anymore. I'll be formatting in a few days when some new kit arrives *giggles like an excited kid at Xmas*

Well I thought I'd last until early next week... then things took a turn for the worse. System ground to an absolute halt, so I reset... wooo XP wouldn't boot any more. Even better, XP Recovery mode couldn't list the drive's contents

So, I tore the side off my PC, had a poke about in a manly fashion, then powered the thing up again. BANG, she boots, and near the end of bootup, instead of just resetting (how boring a way to fail) chkdsk starts up and goes RAMBO STYLE with my C: drive. Never have I seen so many invalid indexes and orphan files repaired.

    Now all looks gravy.

So, working on a hunch, I think maybe the SCSI cable was loose, but SCSI is so damn good that the error correction was working overtime for nearly a fortnight, saving my skin for most of it! How about that? Wouldn't get that kind of tolerance on an IDE interface now would you?

*Prays not to see another delayed write error again...*

Nice, I tried that with my modem (poking around in a manly fashion) but it still didn't work!

Glad to hear you got it sorted out. At least you learnt a lesson (?)
