    Fedora struggles

I am having trouble getting myself on the internet using Fedora core 2.

Funnily i am on the linux box right now writing this. It will only let me access about 3 websited...Hexus.net, Redhat.com and GNU.org (i think its that).

Now the fact that i am able to post this message is baffling me as it wont even let me visit google or yahoo. telling me 'connection refused'

    Help?
    Thanks,
    Nem

NIC should be pulling netowrk info from routers DHCP server.

DNS problem maybe? Has your router got the dns info for those 3 sites cached?
if so then you should be able to get to http://216.239.57.99 <----- google via direct ip.

Other than that - i aint no linux man so cant help.

    good luck

    ok - look at

a.) Resolv.conf see what your dns config is
b.) nsswitch.conf make sure DNS is in the list.

If your resolv.conf points at 127.0.0.1 (or one of your other IP's) make sure you have a name server (forwarding) running on your local machine

Try some tests using nslookup or dig to see if you either get an error that gives you a better idea or if you get some results.

Try putting some known IP addresses (like the one mentioned in the response above mine) in /etc/hosts and see if the webbrowser works.

Has your browser got some sort of proxy config set that is bypassed for certain addresses ?

Can you ping some sites by name/IP address ?

that should get you on your way....
    It is Inevitable.....

    AARGH

Right i can ping the sites in a terminal window and even visit most of them when using the ip address rather than the domain name. So i take it its a DNS problem. My XP installation and my XP laptop both access the internet fine via the same router.

I havent setup any proxies anywhere so i dont think its that, although my router log does say something about not being able to determine linux drv or something =/

ns lookup pulls up some domains fine, ie google.com yahoo.com, msn.com but on some others it says non-authoritative answer before giving me the ip.

Resolv.conf points at 192.168.1.1 which is routers IP address.
Can you give me an example of a line that includes DNS in nsswitch.conf closest i have is:
    Code:
    hosts: files dns
    Thanks

    tricky

    ok - this looks interesting

your nsswitch.conf looks fine as its resolving your hostfile, then if its not found DNS.

When you are using nslookup and you get the "non-authoritive" alert - don't worry it just means YOUR dns server is not authoritive for this domain.

The domains your doing the lookup on - are they in the host file ? if so I suggest removing them and trying them again.

One of the good ways to test is find a domain your web browser is failing on, then try using dig or nslookup on that domain, then assuming it gives you an IP address, try hitting the IP address.

This certainly looks like a dns problem, but that fact that your getting results from nslookup is a bit confusing(although nslookup is not always perfect - just a guide)

The fact that your router has an error on it about some linux drivers not a good thing - but not the end of the world either.

its hard to know whats going on over a forum so I suggest the following

clear down your syslog (location depending on distro)

reboot the machine - do nothing but try a few websites then post the output of the syslog.

why not try my test site for a test

    http://www.projecthugo.co.uk

see if you get a holding page

    nslookup should map to 217.34.194.218

lets see how that goes on and try to figure out whats wrong

ooh another thing to look at is the default router.

on redhat (I may be wrong here I am rusty with redhat/fedora) /etc/sysconfig/network should have a default route, make sure thats the correct gateway (probably your routing)

The other thing to check is to make sure ip forwarding is on, on your router.

www.projecthugo.co.uk is resolving to the right IP address

I think i have sold the resoution problem as my browser no loner says resolving, it now says connecting then i get a message saying 'connection refused'

The only thing in my hosts files is localhost.

Direct IP browsing is still working however =/ hmmmm...... ill try and download another browser on my laptop and fling it on a cd to test.
Does linux have a ports collection like BSD? i thaught that was very useful.

Thanks for all the help so far, i do appreciate it!
