    alternatives to Microsoft Outlook?

Just wondering if anyone is using an email client that they feel is better than outlook? I have been using Outlook for awhile, its OK but its still not amazing or anything. I have accounts from gmail/hotmail and microsoft exchange so it needs to support them (maybe not the hotmail side) i could access them online but its just a bit of a faff id rather be able to launch a program and have access to all of them at once.

    Any suggestions?

I use Thunderbird. Not sure how it would work with exchange server, although that is 'imap like' I don't know if it open imap or a proprietary version of it. You would probably lose the collaborative calendar functions that come with exchange.

    Re: alternatives to Microsoft Outlook?

I'm currently just using the built in email client in opera, since it's one less thing I have to have to open kinda thing.
Works fine for me with a mixture of hotmail and gmail accounts.

Otherwise I'd look at thunderbird, or maybe windows live mail?

    Re: alternatives to Microsoft Outlook?

How many exchange services do you use outside of email? My experience is that if you just use Exchange for email you should be fine with any other mail client, but if you use Calendar/Task lists/Scheduling etc. then you really need Outlook. The down side of that is my experience of using Outlook as an imap client for other email accounts was always very poor - even Outlook Express was better for that!

If you do just need the email features of Outlook though, Thunderbird is a decent email client (I used to use it when work was on Oracle mail servers, before we migrated to Exchange) and at home I just use Windows Live Mail, which does the job perfectly for imap mailboxes...

    Re: alternatives to Microsoft Outlook?

Sorry i swear ive clicked the reply button multiple times, this is the third post ive written . Yeah i dont need the exchange services just the email side and i noticed after posting that it has all the imap setting for me to use etc, got google calender for everything else .

Been using it for a bit now and i think its better than outlook , shame that they are now dropping support though so i may try windows live mail again (havent tried since it was launched!).

    Appreciate the suggestions .

My experience is that Outlook can't be beat if you are in an organisation and want to share resources, book meetings, etc. The 2010 version is very powerful, with threaded conversations and built in presence through Lync/OCS.

I also use it with IMAPS with Gmail. The experience is OK, there are issues with GMail's label structure as Outlook doesn't understand that the same mail item can exist in two locations. Trouble is that GMail does not support S/MIME digital signatures without an external client, I tend to send signed email and this is impossible with the GMail web client.
