TeraCopy - not a bad utility

Just wanted to drop a line of respect towards TeraCopy, which i'm using to replace the standard copy facility in Windows Explorer.

It's a 'does what it says on the tin' kind of applications, simply integrates into Explorer, doesnt require any extra button presses (crucial), but gives either just a little bit extra info (default view) or alot of extra info as needed.
Plus, you can stack up transfers really simply.

Been using it so far for about a week with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, and no negative aspects arisen so far

so what do you use it for?

Are you replicating large amounts of files from one drive to another?

Re: TeraCopy - not a bad utility

Indeed, am currently copying from my NAS to an external USB hard drive (via my desktop) what will probably end up being around 2TB of data, made from files of mostly over 100 MB each.
I love the way that i can select files from one folder, set that to be copied, and then select files from a 2nd folder ready to copy, which then become queued as a second TeraCopy box, and begin to work from a 3rd folder etc etc, all without reducing the transfer speed of the first group of files.

With Windows Explorer, you try doing this and the whole lot slows down to a crawl as it tries to manage everything simultaneously.

thanks MSIC, gonna try it with my NAS, Laptop and phone... always slows to a halt when copying gigs over.. this seems rather good!

Re: TeraCopy - not a bad utility

The only problem I find with using it integrated is that every time you want to copy (or move) something, even the smallest of files, it has to load TeraCopy, so there's always a slight delay, which becomes annoying quickly.

As such I use it with Directory Opus, where I use the standard Opus cut/copy/move system, but have buttons on the toolbar if I want to use TeraCopy.

It's very useful when copying lots of data between work and home - just tell it which folders to copy from and to, and go and do something else while it goes through the queue.

Re: TeraCopy - not a bad utility

That's interesting about the delay - i havent noticed any, however I do have 6 Gig RAM in my system.
Perhaps with a Gig or two (or less), it might become apparent?

Re: TeraCopy - not a bad utility

Well I've got 12gb, so it's not the RAM.

Maybe it's unfair comparing it to the Directory Opus copy/paste system, which is as instant as an instant thing. There is a distinct delay while it loads compared to Opus though.

The Explorer copy/paste dialog boxes (it's fairly instant when it doesn't pop up the box though, either for moves or for small copies) were always a bit clunky, so I guess it may be on par with that.

Re: TeraCopy - not a bad utility

I use it with Opus too - i've been asking gpsoftware to add queuing to Opus for ages because it makes a huge difference when transferring files and avoid drive thrashing. As above I just have two buttons in opus - TeraCopy and TeraMove - so i can use it only when needed.

Just bear in mind claims about it being faster are horse**** - it's real use it to queue.

i use it on a 1gb intel atom netbook and there's no more delay than the windows explorer file transfer.

i think the best thing about teracopy is that you can queue transfers

For me as I said, it's the queuing as well as the info it gives you (about transfer speeds as well as info on files transferred, awaiting etc).
Glad it was of use to point it out though, and I may well look into Opus too.

what is the difference of using robocopy with jumbo frames enabled? that's what i do from my workstation to the iscsi storage - nic+switch+openfiler with JF enabled. Haven't done benchmarks recently but it seems it achieves quite good speeds.

Been using this at work for a long time now, it works very well, much better than the broken windows file copy.

You see, for most robocopy is just too complicated...

I personally love it, use it all the time to do my scheduled backups as well as in shutdown script.

Windows explorer is really bad for moving large amounts of data purely because it constantly measures the performance of the copy operation impacting the speed.

Curious - and why would that affect the transfer? Calculating the current transfer speed, average and time left can all be done without impacting the throughput at all in code.
