Recommend Me a Shell?
Guys,
I am running Windows XP and am looking for a Shell to replace the standard windows desktop. I have recently tried the Aston shell which I found very good. However this is only shareware and I don’t wont to pay to continue using it (I know there are certain ways you can avoid paying for it by writing a plug in etc). Can anyone recommend any good (and free) shells that are available?
Are there any decent linux shells that people would recommend?
Thanks in advance guys.

i've never found anything i like, shell-wise, for windows.
i wuv xfce4 on linux though

windows NT used to have the posix shell in it. I don't know if XP has it ? try that.
There used to be the "unix Services" for windows that added some unix functionality to the windows shell ? does that still work with XP ?
Try building bash on a windows machine, don't think it will work out the box and there will be some deps missing but dunno - worth a try.
Also look on download.com there are tons of shells availble for windows. Never used any though

think he's after a replacement for explorer.exe, not cmd.exe
and services for unix is still available, free download on microsoft.com, featuring the korn & c shells - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sfu...ds/default.asp

Yep as directhex says a replacement for explorer please.
Doesn't anyone else use shells as opposed to using windows explorer?
(Thanks for the replies directhex)

www.astonshell.com
You can trial it, and I loved it so much I bought it. It is a tweaker's shell, requiring a lot of fiddling, but it means you get things the way YOU want them.
explorer.exe is still used for file browsing, however you can choose to have it running only when necessary, meaning it isn't sat in memory all the time heading towards a crash. Aston hasn't crashed on me during normal usage.
Version 2 of Aston should be out soon, and providing it's as good/better as 1.9, I'll be upgrading.

lol, he said he tried Aston shell already. I can't recommend any Windows shells, but I can recommend some nice Linux ones.
-
So he did!
I've tried litestep and another one too (can't remember name) but they seemed to break stuff, unlike Aston.
I'll stick by my guns and say it's worth the money. However if you must have a free alternative then I cannot recommend anything, sorry.

The old saying goes, you get what you pay for and in this case it's worth paying.

Thanks all for the replies. I will keep looking around for new shells to try otherwise I think I will invest in the aston shell.
Thanks again.

Tried litestep? I hated it, but you might like it.

oooh. I qiute liked geoShell.. but my *SUCKY* tv card software does not run in a window for some reason.. It is the Tv software I am sure because it is RUBBISH + I have no choice to use any other tv software :( because the card has software decoding.
Ah well. I did like GeoShell it was purdy
