having used a blowtorch on his feet, he tells me

"Photoshop kept skipping up with a mouse issue, so I installed SPeedyPC because I reported the problem to Microsoft and week later got the email telling me to but this thing" and it's Micrososft authorised.

I sorted the "skipping up" quickly.. error blue bar at top of Photoshop.. googled it.. found quick solution (run in Vista compat mode)

If it makes you feel any better, my mum had a Windows PC for 10+ years before she realised you could resize the Windows. She saw me do it one day, and was like "Well I never!". Up until that point, she'd just been making do with whatever the size of the window was when the application first started up.

    Just unbelievable.

Re: Parents: don't leave them alone with their own PC for months on end....

Indeed. I've trained my folks in law to ask me to set up any new computers (remotely if necessary) so I can get them clean, protected, auto-updating and otherwise quite locked down. Since doing that I get significantly fewer calls for support and their computers 'just work'.

Kal... my mum's lappy... (on it now) is like new... she's LEARNED... Zak shouts and throws things on the road.

    Her lappy works.

But Dad...... film editor (good at it) and photographer (thinks he's good at it) had to have an uber PC.... and buys lots of new stuff.

The boot is sometimes on the other foot - I have three grown up (I believe) children and I spend time fixing/correcting their PC's that they use and occasionally inadvertantly modify. Drives me banana's but I do like a challenge

I'd say it's clear you like a challenge .... you have three grown-up kids. Either that, or a wide streak of masochism.

Hint - Saracen View of Raising Kids

    1) Up to 18 months, lots of cooing and cuddling is cute. When the nappy needs changing, hand the wife her child.

    2) When they start to walk, seal them in a barrel and feed them through the bung hole.

    3) When they get to the "precocious teenager" stage, drive in the bung.

NB. For anyone with a terminal sense of humour failure, I'm not entirely serious.

Re: Parents: don't leave them alone with their own PC for months on end....

First thing I did when I built my parents PC was to remove the ability for them to install anything.

Once a month I remote desktop in to update the browsers and stuff - nice and easy. If they want something installing they ring me - which has never happened because they don't know what installing means

my father in law saves his problems until approx 30 mins after my bro in laws been round, he then trys to blame him when i ask what dodgy sites has he been on this time...

i know it isn't my bro in law as he knows how to use the privacy options

Windows 7 + MSE + Malwarebytes (website blocking on) + UAC enabled + train to say no when screen goes black = no problems in a few YEARS. Compare that to the agony of XP..
