The most efficient compression?
I'll be getting into a new backup regime, and wondered what compression algorith provides the best compression and throughput?
Small archive size is good, but I'd prefer it not to take 100% CPU for an hour... if you see what I mean.
I'm contemplating rar as it's an old friend of mine, hehe, but any alternatives are welcomed.

I'd RAR it up. Split what your backing up into an array of RAR's.
Or you could get a new HDD?
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
The backups will go onto a 200GB external drive that I have.
I'm playing around with 7zip right now, but I like rar's.

rar is pretty good, as is bzip2
rar makes me happy.

If you have any sensative data RAR has a better passwording and encryption against the likes of ZIP Files. Also note you will get slightly better compression than ZIP, or ACE.
Another vote for rar, best compression but at the cost of speed.
