    Firewall and A/V for ICS?

    Hello again Hexus folk.

I've been away travelling for a quite a while and now I'm back to the groove I'm thinking a tablet. I promise you I have spent 3 hours trawling the net for this answer and searched the forums. Found nothing at all for this question which made me think.
So, at the risk of asking a really stupid question - and I don't claim much knowledge on the mobile front with tabs/phones etc- can you get a firewall and anti - virus for devices running Ice Cream Sandwich?

As Android is based on Linux [that's right eh?] I would assume so. But can't find one article on it. Not on GSM arena, where I go for my mobile device knowledge, or on the net. Or here. Maybe cos I'm tired now - still getting internal clock sorted - but I have seen nothing on it. So er, can you?

    [Waits for onslaught....].

Nice to see some familiar names here still btw. ;-)

Re: Firewall and A/V for ICS?

There's a variety of anti-viruses and firewalls available. Best bet is to search the Play Store online for the software you want.

here's a search link for anti virus: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=anti+virus
    and one for firewall: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=firewall&c=apps

It looks like most firewalls require root access, so check whether you can root the device before committing to a firewall.

Thanks Scaryjim - not the first time you have been helpful to me I think, so nice one feller. As I get to grips with mobile devices -yes am behind the curve on this but catching up - I am filling in the gaps. Rooting - now that's when you actually get control of the device isn't it? Apple don't let you I believe. Off to google it! :-)

Re: Firewall and A/V for ICS?

I would recommend Avast for Android. Really good software, not to invasive and also has 'tracking' functionality built in. If your phone/tablet should ever be stolen, you can control it remotely (remote lock device, display message on screen, wipe memory etc...) and see where it is.
