Unless he has an ATi based card that should not be there. I formatted last week and left my rj45 plugged in when I was downstairs having a quick ciggy while windows installed. suffice to say, I got back and it was a worm that uses an overflow to get into your PC and then opens an IRC server and connects to irc.test.net so if you think their connection is a little slow : get the command prompt up and netstat -a to see if there is any IRC connections.

I'd personally backup any URGENT data and do the good old microsoft monthly ( format C:/ /q ) and reinstall and make sure all the spyware and possibly worms have been removed for good. Then I would install all the required safety tools such as an AV and firewall, spyware detector and also google toolbar so it blocks popups

I know your pain mate - anything remotely 1/2 happening to any of my families PC's and guess who the first person they ring is.... yeap thats correct, my brother who tells them to bugger off so they come crawling to me

Apologies for the hijack, is there anywhere that lists whats needed for a laptop on XP in relation to StartUp.
Attempting to fix a friends laptop and its full of rubbish @ startup, just need to know whats needed and err whats not

Iain - I could do you a list when I get home and pick up the laptop, but the problem with laptops is that they tend to have a fair number of manufacture-specific startup programs, so a list for an IBM laptop will be very different from a dell or Toshiba, etc..

I know my thinkpad has about 5 ibm startup progs, all called something like TPISGKED.exe, so the list might not transfer too well.

It might be long winded, but if you just google search for each entry, you'll soon find if they're trustworthy or not.

It's not just coincidence that Norton appears at the bottom of so many Firewall/Anti Virus comparisons. The main reason i hate it is becuase of it's fantastic ability to hog resources on your system. Also, it has many in the past been so over-zealous in detecting viruses that it would go around deleting various program/system files. Since then, they have slackened various detection algoithims and it now lets viruses manifest themselves on systems wih various software setups.

Ok so it can use a few system resources but then it does watch all FS activity on the drive, email and memory.

False positives can also happen...accepted, even if you are generalising a bit.

Could you provide some evidence for your last claim beyond hearsay? It genuinely interests me and is news to me as the detection algorithms have improved if anything. thanks
