    WAMP Questions

I did a very brief search, I do apologize if the answer is sitting in plain view some where.

I currently have my main PC (should be shown on the side bar I think), a laptop and hopefully I could try get my paws on some rather old thing if I nose about my parents house if they have some odds and ends to stick together. As I am mainly Windows based, I was looking into installing a WAMP, though there seems to be a fair few out there.

Now to the really daft question. Can this be run off my main PC while I am using it such as a second HDD, or does it have to be running off of a separate machine?

This server will be used mainly for an assignment and not much for the public domain.

I have used wampserver. You can install it anywhere you want. It doesnt have to be on a second drive. It will just run as windows services. If it is for an assignment then it would be essiest to run it on the same machine you will be doing it on.

Alternatively, get the old machine from your parents and install a lamp server on it. Easiest would be with ubuntu. As its old hardware linux would be better than windows.

    Re: WAMP Questions

    Thank you for your reply.

I will run it straight on my current machine for the moment to save a bit of hassle trying to get the other one up and running, it seems to missing some bits and bobs.

When I did some Googlefu wampserver was the 1st one to come up, it looks alright though there seem to be more available. I think I will give wampserver a bash unless there are any other suggestions.

    Re: WAMP Questions

Is wampserver any different to just installing them separately?

    Re: WAMP Questions

Not a clue to be completely honest. It properly is not, though perhaps from a convenience perspective it is?

    Re: WAMP Questions

Should be called AmpServer for Windows really, since I doubt it includes windows as part of the package!

But yeah if it makes the install automatic then seems pretty convenient

    Re: WAMP Questions

WAMP is a pre-integrated package of Apache, MySQL and PHP to give you for installation on a Windows based PC. It works well, and the little bit if configuration is taken care of by an install script.

If you use a Linux based PC, then most if the common distros (Ubuntu, Fedora etc) will offer precompiled binaries of the three applications (Apache, MySQL and php) that will work together with little effort.

If you want to customise any of them, you can download the source code and compile in The modules you need.

But if this is for an assignment where the requirement is for a working server as a tool, then WAMP will do the job. It is a fully functioning web server with database integration.

    Re: WAMP Questions

Check out the Uniform Server: http://www.uniformserver.com/

It's the "same" as WAMP in what it does and packages, but comes with a better control panel and a great community.

It's also updated very fast for security updates and is totally locked down for production use. These are not really concerns if running locally, but the package as a whole is more polished than WAMP. I'm a convert to it
