Good free program for recording auido from the computer?

I need something that can just record sound coming from the computer in high quality. Like if I was listening to a bit of music or something. A program that could just record that. Thanks.

I think with Audacity you can plug a cable from the mic to the headphone socket and just record whatever is playing?

Can't remember though, regardless Audacity is a good free music editor.

I am sure with audioacity, you can recorded ' whatever is playing ' through the application itself. no need to run any cables.

nah just from my hard drive. i just want to be able to record sounds being played whether they're from a film or music, whatever... i'm not looking to copy/rip/extract audio files. i literally just want to record the sound coming from the computer in high quality.

Comes as part of the software with creative sound cards, think you can download it from various sites. Don't know if it works with non creative cards though (would expect not)

Re: Good free program for recording auido from the computer?

I use Audacity as others have mentioned and it works fine for me.

Audacity > Edit > Perfs > Devices > Recording and select What you hear (soundcard)

If that doesn't work then its probably been muted.

Start > Control Panel > Sound > Recording What you hear > unmute/turn up.

Ok I'll give Audacity another go. Thanks.

Audacity is decent and should keep you covered for basic stuff. If you want somethinga bit ore powerful, although not free, Reaper offers a 30 day trial and then has very competitive prices for the licenses if you decide to keep going with it.

That don't look to bad and it's cheap! I've made a few songs with ableton and loved it but I can't afford to buy it. Do you have much experience with Reaper? Is it good for programming electronic music and using vst's? I'm slowly getting gear together for making music. Ordered a Shure SM57 for my guitar today A preamp for that, midi keyboard and music production software are next on the list so this could be just what I'm looking for seeing as I'm on a budget!

Edit: I was also thinking of getting this btw. It's meant to be a lot like ableton live, but cheaper... http://bitwig.com/bitwig_studio.php
Also it's gonna be on Linux which is a huge + for me seeing as I plan on moving to Linux full time once valve get steam games working on ubuntu. Man, exciting

Re: Good free program for recording auido from the computer?

im not a serious music production person, i have a lot of friends who are and Reaper is something that one of my mates in particular loves. I cant talk about it first hand i can only pass on a second hand recommendation.

He only uses it for recording and basic mixing, nothing too advanced really as he is more of a session player. I should see him soon though so i will pass on any questions you have!

No harm in giving the trial a crack though eh!

Yes that's right. I might as well just give the trial a go I'm gonna try the bitwig trial when that's available to. I think I'm probably gonna go for bitwig if the price is right, seeing as it has the live feature and is available on linux. But I wont rule out Reaper just yet! Can always keep a W7 installation on a seperate drive for using it. Cheers
