So who can tell me about the next MS operating system,

I find it hard ‘googling’ as I just end up with jargon, rumors and crap!

I don't think next version of windows is due till 2006 (well the replacement for xp isn't)
From memory its codename is longhorn, supposed to be based on a full relational database model.

most of longhorn's features have been clipped - the database file system & direct3d based gui are gone, what's left is the advanced DRM

the d3d based gui is being taken out of longhorn and supposedly being released as an add-on for XP. pinch of salt optional.

they have dropped all the new gui components due to project being over due and over budget, the next release will look pretty similar to XP, although when it was designed it looked completly different, very similar to the looking glass idea.
    It is Inevitable.....

there are beta's a college of mine has one. But there is so much missing because harldy any of the main features are done. There was no new gui in the early test releases, and now there never will.

    Ahhh, good old "Shorthorn"

Basically without all the advanced features there's little point in upgrading to it.

Personally I'm not going to bother and will probably have moved over to some varient of Linux by then.

officially, avalon has been axed from longhorn, and winfs has been extremely castrated.

what's left is indigo, the DRM backbone.

So the next version of windows will have no advanced file system and no flashy 3D GUI?
The only new feature will be that I have to get permission from Microsoft to open my own files?

I for one definitely won't be upgrading!! Particularly seeing as I still run Win2K and am happy with it.
