    Vista to Windows 8

I am in a dilemma and in need for information, I am thinking of moving over to windows 8 on my laptop via the upgrade option, but my laptop has 32 bit Vista installed and my question is would I be able to upgrade it to 64 bit, if not there is no big issue, I find Vista bordering on the ok and I am running Windows 7 64 bit on my main machine, plus would I lose any programs that are installed on my laptop which are mainly photo processing programs.

Best to find out if its worth upgrading or should I order windows 7 before they go off the shelves.

Scratching my had at this one.

You should be able to upgrade to 64 bit just fine, assuming your processor is 64 bit enabled.

Find out if your laptop is compatible for an upgrade at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827218#method1
    I can't post URL until I have 5 posts or more :l
I would rather upgrade to windows 7 though as I'm not a fan of the Metro appearance.

    Hi Geoff,

Did you manage to upgrade to 64 bit win 8 from 32 bit Vista? This is what I'm hoping to do and would love to confirm if its possible!

I did the £25 download and it would not give me the option to go up to 64 bit, but to tell you the truth I am very happy with the results on my laptop, with only one driver not working and that was for a tv card which I never use. So I am still with 32 bit.

Ah, OK. Hmm, that could be an issue for me then as I really want to go 64 bit to make use of the 4GB RAM I have in the box I want to upgrade..... ar$e.

Has anyone else been able to go from 32 bit to 64 bit win 8?

    Re: Vista to Windows 8

In-place upgrade on Windows has never permitted (to my knowledge) 32-bit -> 64-bit.

IIRC, that shouldn't prevent you from buying an upgrade license and completing a clean installation using the key.

I've not got issue doing a clean install, but from what I can see if you upgrade online, you don't actually get to download an ISO to boot from. I might be wrong though, as I've not done it yet!!

Once you have completed the checkout you are given the option to download the files to your hard drive or to download and burn the media to install from.

Thanks Jon. So am I given the option to download the 64 bit install image if trying to upgrade from a 32 bit operating system?!

Not with the £25 upgrade. It downloads the relevant ISO based on your current OS. Read below link for more info.

I think you can do the upgrade process on a 64-bit machine to download the 64-bit ISO and then use the ISO and key on your 32-bit machine to upgrade to 64-bit - but I haven't done that myself to confirm.

As Barry said, you don't get a choice as to download 32 or 64 bit, but you could try what Barry has said. All the best with it

    Re: Vista to Windows 8

I believe the 32 bit key works with 64 bit Windows, so if you have bought a key already or even if not, you could always just find anyone running a 64 bit operating system and run the upgrade assistant on it, and then just burn the iso from the upgrade assistant, you don't actually have to install it on that particular machine.

Hope all that made sense, its late.

That was my thought. Don't know how fussy the upgrade keys are, certainly for retail it was always a choice between 32-bit and 64-bit.
