    Win98SE > WinXP = no hair left

    AAAAAAAAHHHHH! #2

    hello all.
i posted in the connectivity forums yesterday about a problem i was having installing a wireless NIC into a 98SE machine. I couldnt find a fix, so basically i thought id install winXP on the box.

however, after backing everything up, setup hangs after the first reboot to DOS, saying 'setup is starting windows'..... and it sits there and does nothing at all. i've surfed the web till the water ran out to find a solution for this one but still nothing.

i know its an old machine, but if anyone could help i'd be eternally grateful!

    heres the machine spec:
    1.2 TBird (9 x 133)
    Abit KT7A (WW Bios)
    512Mb PC133
    30Gb WD HDD
    Asus GeForce 3 Deluxe
    Soundblaster Live!

    TIA!

xp doesn't HAVE any DOS - so there's no reboots involving it.

upgrade installs of windows commonly fail, your best bet is to boot the xp cd, and format the drive completely as ntfs during the installation process.

    thanks for replying directhex!

I did try what you suggested and formatted to NTFS and install on the clean drive. Although it would still hang at the same point.

I did manage to find a site which said that XP + old abit boards + NVidia cards = problems. So the workaround was to put in another graphics card. The only one i had to hand was a 7 year old Voodoo 3 3000 AGP
and it worked! installed fine, put GF3 back in after install and its all 100% solid

    next stop, screwed up central!
