    Exclamation Problems With New XP

    My parents asked me if I would reformat their hard disk, as it had a lot of junk on it from the internet. I said I could put on windows XP on if they wanted too.

    I put in the XP disk, and it asked me if I wanted to delete the partition etc, so I said yes. Here are my problems:

    * It's not letting me put the files back. It just stops and freezes (sometimes).
    * When I sut down it says "it's now safe to turn off your computer" - it never used to do that .
    * Sometimes it says "cannot read from source file or disk" when I try to copy a file that was saved .
    * Twice now, it's shut down after a minutes warning saying here's a problem with lsass.exe in system 32 .

    Any suggestions? Should I go back to windows 98?

    ----> The PC have a 500 MHz processor and 192 MB ram.

    "lsass.exe" I dont know what it is but it has been the reason for many formats on my rig! As for the "its now safe.." I never heard of that on XP.... Sounds like your system is posesed! That old 98 wont let go! Did you download and instal all of the chip set drivers? And take all the windows updates?

    1-minute warnings are virus-based - you haven't adequately protected the machine, and it's crawling with viruses.

    end of, really.

    next time, install a software firewall before connecting it to the internet for the first time, and hit windowsupdate for all it's worth - followed by downloading & installing a free antivirus program such as www.freeav.com

    "It's now safe" is because it's got the standard PC driver instead of an ACPI driver.

    Where you trying to read files from? Floppy disk or second HD?

    Directhex - I only connected to the internet for a few seconds, just to see if it worked - could I really have a virus from that short length???

    Jiff_lemon - How do you get an ACPI driver?

    I don't know what you mean by where are you trying to read your files from.

    Oh yes, you can - the average length of time for an unpatched unprotected Windows XP box hitting the Internet to be completely owned is 20 minutes. You'd survive longer taking a Fairey Battle in against a Ta-152H, than taking an unprotected Windows box on to the Internet.

    The standard as opposed to ACPI thing is to do with having a PC capable of being power-managed in software (so it can be powered off by the OS). Changing to an ACPI compliant mode requires a reinstall, but READ THE FOLLWING KNOWLEDGE BASE ARTICLE FIRST:

    Forcing a Hardware Abstraction Layer during and XP install

    As to where the files are being read from, CD, floppy, network?

    you can change HAL type without reformatting, i've done so several times.

    right click on my computer, manage, device manager, computer, update driver, select specific location, don't search (i will choose), ACPI of some sort should be listed.

    Doesn't always work directhex... I've tried myself.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    It's only some files that won't be copied - it's the same on the computer I'm using now. I'm beginning to think it could be the disk they're on - could they be corrupted or something?

    Yes, that's quite possible.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Directhex - it didn't work on our computer, ACPI wasn't in the list, only "Standard computer".

    I'm certain I don't have an APM option. Anyway, due to freezing, crashing and general slowness, we've decided to go back to windows 98.
